Not sure what amps pair well the with the HE-500's though.

HE500s are very forgiving IMO and sound nice out of anything, much like HE400s. They are a different breed compared to HE#-singledigits.

Highly considering making these cans my next purchase, but I really appreciate a can that sounds good at lower levels. I hear these bad boys don't really shine unless they are booming! Can anyone confirm / deny this?

They don't really need a lot of the volume pot to get up to full speed. So I'd say that you're good to go.

Also, I ordered a fiio e07k to play with and will try out with the he400. Found a place to get it for $80 shipped which I thought was a decent deal. More to come...

So what does everyone have their PC volume at with magni + modi and HE-400 and how much does the volume pot give you with those specifically? How much does it give you with PC volume at 100%? How far does it give you and where does the imbalance go away?

I don't have the computer's volume level in the chain between my computer and the Schiit Modi.  The volume is all controlled via the POT on the Magni itself.

FooBar --> Wasapi (Schiit USB DAC) --> Modi --> Magni --> Heaphones = Joy.

Sweet.  I've been looking at it to pull into the mix somewhere.  I realize the E17 is more powerful, but it would be interesting to see what features the E07K Andes can bring into the mix.

This outfit on ebay has a buy it now option for the e07k. I tried $80 and immediately got an acceptance notification. Makes me wonder just what they'd take. I've bought from them before.

Is the computer's volume at zero or not affected at all? I use Wasapi, is that something that comes from that? What about Foobar's volume? Do you have decent control with the Magni? I just don't want it to be a terrible buy for these headphones specifically. Hard to sort out the volume pot issues from review to review specifically for the HE-400.

Just before I make a purchase I get the most paranoid, haha.

^^ The volume on the pc and player should be maxed. All volume will then be controlled by the amp only.

James, looks we you and I both shop at the big and tall store.
