Headphones for metal music - ultimate solution
Jun 4, 2015 at 11:56 AM Post #1,381 of 12,322
So I bought an Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBL and will receive it on Saturday... tomorrow!

That post was about the rare AD2000, not the in-production AD2000X. In the posts I linked to, @Asr compares them and says the AD2000 is far superior.

I sure hope you were referring to the AD2000 when you said you didn't like it, since the AD2000X is a different headphone.

I realised  I use to own the AD2000 too but sold it as it didn't click with me, but that was a few years ago now. Far superior is a bit of an exaggeration.

I could use some input on the largest differences between sound signature and sound quality of these 3 headphones.

DT990/600 vs. HE-560:
DT990/600 vs. HD800:
Quantity vs. Quality
Treble: x > x ≥ x
Sub bass: x > x = x
Mid bass: x > x = x

My Violectric HPA V100 is capable of powering any/all of these and is pretty much a neutral/smooth SS amp. My Matrix Mini-i Pro DAC isn't quite as balanced having less bass than mid/treble presence and is aggressive. I tried my old DT990/600 on the combo before selling them off and there was no glaring sibilance and any hot treble I experienced with my Asgard 2 was gone as well. I don't think the treble of any of the 3 will bother me on my setup. I liked the sound of the DT990/600, but I know there are higher quality headphones on the market. Really the DT990/600 is a fallback if nothing else blows me away (with the bonus of being extremely affordable).

Uhhh, edit for more clarification: an HE-6 is beyond my budget having to buy completely different amp(s). HE1000 is beyond my budget for obvious reasons. Audeze & Abyss weigh too much without going into their sound signature. A T90 or T1 doesn't seem to be worth the added investment over a DT990/600. I don't need another portable or closed headphone.

I don't own the HE560, but I do own the HD800 and DT990. However, I do own several other HiFiMans and have read enough comparison reviews that I feel pretty comfortable telling you where it stands relative to the other two phones.

Treble Quantity:
HD800 > DT990 > HE560

Treble Quality:
HD800 > HE560 > DT990

Sub bass Quantity:
HE560 > HD800 > DT990

Sub bass Quality:
HE560 =/> HD800 >>>>DT990

Mid bass Quantity:
DT990 > HE560 = HD800

Mid bass Quality:
HD800 >/= HE560 > DT990

I should have specified. I meant far superior to his tastes. Read the two posts I linked to. He makes the AD2000 sound exciting and the AD2000X sound boring. But of course, I would need to hear both myself to know how I would like them.

It depends on what you are looking for.

HE560: faster, more detailed, more soundstage.
LCD-2: Much stronger bass, less fatiguing, more euphonic maybe

Yeah-I think you nailed it. What hard choice! I want it all. Ah-ha-ha-ha

You can use this tutorial to get it to work with foobar2000.

Makes my Sony sound so much better it's unbelievable. (Like going from extremely bright and harsh to natural and realistic.) Gonna try it with the M50x tomorrow.

LCD-X then! (it's a solid in between)

Meh, LCD-X. For that money get a better headphone - second hand HE-6 and spend the difference on an amp.

That's my type of thinking.

But actually, someone I greatly trust likes the STAX SR-207 more than the HE1000, Abyss, HD 800, HE-6, and even the SR-009! I kind of want to save up for an 009 system, but wonder if I should get the 207 first, since it's so much more affordable.

I just bought an original Lambda off the Sale/Trade forum yesterday. I can't wait to try them out with some metal next week!

Awesome! Which amp are you going to use with it?

Comparisons with the HD 800 are especially appreciated.

I heard the newer Lambdas are either better or worse than the old ones. Who knows...

I'm going to use the SRD-7 adaptor for now. I'll probably pick up the SRM-1 MKII at some point.

I heard the originals are slightly more musical, but slightly less detailed compared to current Lambdas.

You will definitely be hearing some HD800 comparisons!

I really liked the 407 I tried for metal. Extra dry but ultra tight. Was great with tech death.

That's what I'm hoping for!!! Gobs of speed, tightness and detail for stuff like Necrophaegist, Sophicide, Spawn of Possession, Beyond Creation, Gorod, etc.
