I did try to spread audiophile cheer to a few friends. But like I said, they aren't of the sort who drop $150+ on headphones.

The trick is to find them audiophile-quality gear at any price range. Then sooner or later they may start becoming obsessive over audio quality.. that's how I started.
Started cheap and going more and more expensive.

Two of my friends would spend up to $100 and one said $150. There's definitely audio gear in those price ranges to suck them in the audiophile world.
My audiophile friend is getting the CK10 for $270.

It doesn't matter. At least not until I get a DAC myself. Then I will feel somewhat confident with my advice so I can feel holier-than-thou. *Flameshield*
On a serious note, I can't recommend anything sub $100 (it seems). The UR-55's are supposedly really good for the money ($50) and they don't compete next to my SuperFi 5vi (which I don't like that much either and got for the same price). My Grado's were really worth the jump in price though.

The only headphones at my school are the beats by dre studios, and tours, any skullcandies, and bose.  the kids don't really look into what they're buying and since it is so expensive they think that it must be good. plus lots of people like the sound of the studios

That is the wrong thing to do. SQ is a matter of opinion to people completely ignorant to higher end audio. They may like the Beats more because of the bass, thought it may be undetailed, but an unexperienced user can't tell the difference. They wouldn't know what to look for. I say this from comparing my SR225i's to the Beats Studio. I could see how one could say the Beats are better (hip-hop/electronic music) but I wouldn't agree. There is a COMPLETE lack of detail. I don't think a user could tell the difference because most of the population uses iBuds because the don't bother spending $30 on something better. But I am just going on a rant...

Really? I was absolutely blown away when I first heard my sr-60i
Though some people already have hearing loss in their teens.....I sometimes walk past people and clearly hear their music blaring

There are people who have the ear for that and people who don't. I think it really comes down to a person's attention to detail and personal preferences. My friend had a pair of Skullcandy IEM's. I let him try my Shure SE110. He did not like the Shure's at all due to a lack of bass.
I would take detail over bass any day. That may be because I exposed myself to high(er) end(ish) audio a while back. My first purchase were a pair of bass heavy cheaply built V-Moda's. They were amazing for $30. Shure's were amazing for $40. SuperFi 5vi's were alright for $50. Grado's were breath taking for $150. Wow, that is a bit of damage on just low end stuff...

I would say i'd love a balance between the 2 XP...the bass could be a little bit overpowering but if it overpowers the highs and mids way too much then thats just not nice for me...I'm not a bass head btw XP...my first pair of decent headphones was one of those philips IEMs...they were pretty good for its price imo :p....saw someone with ATH-SJ3 lol

i let one of my high school friends try my m50s, and he liked what he heard. he said he was frustrated with his apple buds. so he actually got himself a pair of srh440s. I'm proud of myself. Now I'm not the only person with cans over $50 at my school
