Well, looks like six specific comparison threads and one funny/sarcastic thread. For the long-anticipated new flagship model of one of the legendary headphone producers, actually seems like admirable restraint...

haha anyone who cant hear the difference is def. if the portapros is the best you can hear then your hearing is bad. i have used both and the difference is like an 80% improvement. try the right type of amp and everything too this is a rediculous thread

Nice thread, but really folks... Need we belabor over the worthiness of these two big guns when we could instead be discussing the relative merits of the PS1000 vs. Sennheiser PX100? That's a head-to-head that I'd love to hear about!

My bet's on the latter based on ergonomics, price-point and headstage alone. ;P

I completely agree with your point, if I understand it correctly.

Having skimmed this thread, and read most of the posts carefully, I think what we have here is "failure to communicate" (Removes mirror glasses, wipes forehead, smirks at Paul Newman...)

I'll get down in the dirt with anyone who wants to make an apples-to-apples comparison, such as between the Portapros and the PX100s. I love the Portapros. But c'mon everybody!! They're $40 cans!!

I understand the frustration of the OP, who may be deeply skeptical of whether nosebleed-expensive cans are **that** much better than decent, budget-priced phones (Portapros, PX100s, ER6's, etc.) But my Portapro fetish has much to do with the fact that they are as good as they are ** FOR THE MONEY**

I think you make the same point when you write "they are what they are." As much as I love my Portapros, I realize that they are not high-end cans. Great value, great as portables, but high-end? Nah.

In other words, I agree with your point, Wmcmanus: the comparison is inappropriate.

I listen to R & B and Techno but to say  Portapros are that good is a joke, they have a nice sound but there muddy and don't even compare to other headphones, although I've not tried many.
If the expensive headphones you mention aren't as good a the portapro's then I'm going to be disappointed or maybe I'm just going to be able to save my cash.

I think the OP was being sarcastic - for the sake of starting a fun thread. 
 
But you can tell from his detailed comments that he feels there's some truth in his basic point.  And I'd have to say that I wholeheartedly agree.  I've been involved in this hobby for 8 years now and I've tried out my fair share of decent cans.  Despite the rather huge (and somewhat embarassing) volume of test units that have come and gone, I find myself constantly gravitating back to 3.....my ATH-W1000 woodies, my HD800 for classical and chamber music, and my Koss Porta Pros for easy, relaxed fun.  The supposed drop in sound quality just isn't enough for me to toss my Porta Pros.  I have 3 sets of them, all taken off their headbands and used with earclips.  They sound great out of nearly anything I plug them into, they're perfectly comfortable, they image really well, their additive in their signature in just the right way, and they cost next to nothing. 
 
How can you beat that?

that's kind of the point I was trying to make more money does not make a better product all of the time, you use *arguably* two of the finest headphones in the world, and yet also go back to the porta pros.
