Couple of ebay sellers have it closer to the original street price, selling for around $1250 if I remember correctly.
Not sure if one can trust the ebay sellers however.

looks like i never be buying them now.... way too much damn money. i was waiting for it to lower. the headphone was doing very well, what happened? i was waiting for it to drop down close to 850 maybe. if i was spending 1500 dollars i rather buy a nice stax rig for that kind of money. in my opinion dynamic drivers shouldn't being costing this much. there out of there minds and it seems there getting kinda cocky now due to high success of their most expensive dynamic headphone.

They are out of their minds, I have to agree.
Still,  if there is a demand, they will keep the price up.

This is really too bad ... considering that the cheaper HE-6, LCD-2, and SR-507 all outperform the HD-800 by a wide margin, I don't see what Sennheiser has to gain here aside from a few clueless noveau riche snob appeal purchases.

They have money to gain from those who see it the other way around, that's what they have to gain.  The 800's are in line with other dynamic flagships.  How can Ultrasone ask $2700. for a flagship or $2000. for a portable.  How can Grado ask $1695. with no flexibility for PS1000s,  How can Beyer ask $1295.  You can still get HD800s for $1500.  I think they are the best out of these from what i have heard and i like them better than the orthos.  If you go for Stat's then you need to invest in a big amp on top of what you already own, hopefully a Blue Hawaiian to make them sound good and that is over $5000.

Maybe the question should be how can all of these dynamic top tiers charge so much.  Guess it is supply and demand.

I can walk down the street and get a pair new from an authorized dealer for 1299.00. And I'm in Canada, land of the gouge.

That's just getting a bit silly. These higher end flagship headphones with "proper" pricing (relative to performance) make more sense at $600-700 tops, imo.

I agree. I would pick up a pair for enjoyment at $700. $1400 always seemed like a bit much for the performance of the cans.

How much are the top teir Grado's, Ultrasone and Beyer-are any at $700.??? and i think the HD800 surpasses all of them.

While I don't agree with the HD800 really surpassing the T1 (probably because I listen to mostly rock/metal), most of the flagships all cost way out of their performance range. I know it's comparing apples to oranges, but I'm of belief that you can achieve much more with $1800 in speakers than you can with the HD800.

Most of headphones $400 and below all greatly surpass what you can achieve with speakers at equal cost, but these flagships are still only headphones and greatly out-cost their performance increase. I know there's a premium for "the best", but $1400 was already up there in comparison to the other flagships available as-is.

This.  You can get a pair of Margin Logan's Source speakers for less than $1500 shipped to your door.  More importantly, other headphones offer the technical performance of the HD800 at a lower price.

How anyone can justify $1500 for these cans is beyond me.

Anywhere - USA, Canada, UK - wherever you like - is cheap compared to Sweden.  They're $1800 USD equivalent here, a Stockholm store that's holding a headphile meet in March.

At the same time, I can get them for under $1000 (plus shipping from Spain) from Supersonido, apparently...  At that price they're tempting for sure.  I might have to sell a few lenses...

I'm wondering how much the K1000 will climb up...

Correction: Supersonido ships only to Spain, Portugal, and France as far as their website shows in checkout.  They've also changed it so that you have to call them to get the price/order the HD 800.   But for those who are/were interested, the price shown yesterday was 719 Euro for just the HD 800 and 799 for it with the Omega stand.

Oh well... Probably better for me financially anyway.

Usually it is the other way around: Prices for consumer electronics and other tec stuff are higher in Europe most of the time. The D7000 sells between 1.100 and 1.300 USD in Germany, the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee is well above 80,000 USD. Most German cars are cheaper in the US than they are over here. I was looking to buy a USBPre2 from Sound Devices that lists for 650 bucks in the USA. This is selling for 1,150 USD in Germany, and US stores may not ship outside the US.

Back to the HD800: Sennheiser charges as much as the market allows them to, which is fine. Seems these babies are in high demand, so why not hike the price?
