Looks like $1500 is the new "street price" and the MSRP is $1800!

Well at least we can thank Senn for improving the used market on these. $1400 for my used HD800, anyone?

MSRP at Sennheiser USA is $1,799.95. (http://www.sennheiserusa.com/dynamic-stereo-headphones-high-sound-quality_500319)

And here I thought prices would decline over time.

Oooops. I stand corrected, i just had checked Headroom on my phone and saw that 1499 MRSP and posted it but didn't check Senn's site until i got home tonight.  Guess they got a look at the ED10's and figured that the 800's sound better and are also made in Germany so why not ask what they are worth.  Look at those and Grado's price and even Ed8 limited portables are two grand.  The only way you pay less is to go for an ortho from an upstart company which is great if you like the ortho sound. If i was going to move away from dynamics it would be toward stats i think.

And those who do like the ortho sound swear by it, in much the same way as 'stats fans love that sound. I have to ask if the HD800 has been overtaken, or if we are just seeing a fashion shift with the mass migration to orthos ?

Interesting that the MSRP went up now, with comparable phones like the LCD-2s around to compete with them at a lower price. For a while I wanted to get these as my first higher end phones, but the cost is too high, and price breaks seem unlikely.

That's just getting a bit silly. These higher end flagship headphones with "proper" pricing (relative to performance) make more sense at $600-700 tops, imo.
