Grado RS series Owner club!

Looks like an older thread, but I'll sign on. I picked up a pair of barely used RS2i's on eBay recently, that I actually think are an early release of the e series, due to the red driver and 1/8" termination. I suspect they have some break-in time yet, enjoying them so far.

I absolutely love the portable Sony PHA-1.  Since Sony has since come out with a PHA-2 with minor enhancements (more digital output formats and better battery life) and is rumored to be on the verge of PHA-3, the PHA-1 can be gotten used at a price of about 50% its new listed price.  Works really well with the RS1i.

My first foray into hi-fi stuffs, RS2e #10587-12. Came from Bose Over Ear (circa ~2009) cans. The Grados are not as comfortable, nor as bassy. The RS2e's clarity, soundstage, and visual aesthetic are much better than the Bose. Getting close to 100hrs of listening time and still training the ear to appreciate these.

Welcome to The Grado Brethren! And thanks for training your ear to appreciate them (rather than reject them in the first few seconds).

The RS is the most fun series. I have two RS1s (but no RS-2s). I also have the entire 5-model Prestige Series. And the PS-500. And the HP-1000. And the PS -1000. And the RA-1 amp. And the HPA-1 amp. And on order, the GS-1000e. Oh, and two Grado aprons and shirts. And a Joseph Grado tenor CD.

No idea this thread existed! My ears are happy to be on board

#1121 RS1 classic owner. Previously owned by Brooko, and thus in pristine condition.

How do i differentiate between classic A or B?

If classic B comes in the regular white cardboard box without the green "filt", then that's the one i have.

I just added XLR8's RS1i to the table of serial numbers above, as well as that of my (second) RS1, with buttons, that I just received (#2709 - a Classic B in the terminology of "Classifying Versions of RS1" here http://www.head-fi.org/t/420092/classifying-versions-of-the-rs1-your-guide-work-in-progress#post_5612882 )

My n.o.s RS1 no:2390 arrived today, so, you can add me to the list.

K&J I know you have written about them in the past but in a simple sentence what is the sonic differences between RS1(vintage) and RS1i?

The RS1 is a small bit bassier. The RS1i is a wee bit treblier. My listening was done with the flats as pads for the RS1 and the bowls for the RS1i, just as Grado sold them. The bassier RS1 may be a result of the buttons, which take a step toward closing them. However, moving from the L bowls to flats tends to decrease bassiness.
