If you have the money and you can find one get a GH2 or RS1 button. Those still stood out in my tests today. The GH2 has an instant feel good sound and the RS1 button is the only Grado i know that does well at bass, mids and treble.
It's kind of sad to see out-of-production models continually being recommended. The X-series models aren't terrible, but it seems like quite a number who have compared the older models against them will prefer the older models. After the Hemp sold very well (so much that there was a 2nd production run), Grado designed the X-series drivers with a similar sound signature, and so here we are today.

I noticed today that the SR80x with S pads works very nicely with the iPod Classic. RS1 button is still better but if i was stuck with the iPod and the 80x i wouldn't be sad. iPod and GH2 worked very well, too. SR325e/PS500e/RS2e were on the boring side with the iPod.
It's really weird how different sound sources favour certain headphones.

I find it quiet the opposite
It just show how good the grado Heritage is.You buy a headphone 5 years ago that can still keep up with its Morden counterparts and retains its resale value.
I don't see many calling the X series and most seem to stay around here once they buy a pair.
I think with grado it is like the classic car ie I have a Range Rover beautiful car with all mod cons but I am looking at buying a 1970 Land Rover that rattles and shake you to bits. Not because it better but because it is different.

I also quite like my GH2 with my iPod Classic. Both the RS-1 Button and, to a lesser degree, the PS500 (non-e) need more power and seem not quite that happy with the iPod. The Hugo seems like a better fit in both cases.

I have to turn the iPod a little louder with the RS1 but there's still plenty of headroom. I tried around an extensive amount of time and for my iPod Classic 7th generation the RS1 button is the best
Another ‘killer’ headphone amplifier for Grados (and other headphones): SparkoS Labs Gemini.
This is a hybrid tube / SS op-amp device. Flat out, simply stated, I have never heard GH2 sound this good. [The tube in use is a Brimar CV455 (Footscray, 1956.)]

I think that explains it. Asgard3 has an output impedance of 0.2, which is really low for pairing with the 300 ohm Verite, and would be a better match for Grados.
That pairing (RS-1 Button plus amp) recently sold in Germany for 500€ with original packaging. A bit of a low ball offering I think though… 600-700€ might have been be more realistic.
I got mine for 450 bucks some months ago, but i was lucky i guess. There are none on Ebay right now so start at 599 or so, depending on how urgent you need money.
