Nobody has mentioned the Panasonic RP-HTF600-S for $30?
 
EDIT: I forgot the OP said 'open', but leaving this suggestion here anyway since I don't have any for a closed.
 
 
They're warm sounding with quite a bit of bass. Decent soundstage. They're technically 'semi open' which I guess isn't as bad as fully open however they isolate poorly. I should also add I heard they are similar sounding to the Monoprice

Panasonic RP-HTF600-S is surely fantastic for the price. I wanted to ...
But since he had 2.5x the budget...wanted to push him towards awesome-ness lolz...Nevertheless, Its a fantastic can to consider hands down...
 
it gets a +1 from me anytime for the price...
