Every time my friends try to tell me the Beats headphones audio quality is good, all I can do is be nice and say they are good but overpriced (my friends own them, so I don't want to crush their thoughts that they made a good investment.)

Recently, I showed people my portable rig, IEM, iPod Touch Generation 1, Silver Cable LOD, JDS Labs C421, and they state that it's bulky and not worth it.  :\  And the worst part, they all asked if my amp played OUT LOUD.  WHY, THE HORRORS!  IT'S NOT A SPEAKER FOR HEAVENS SAKE!

YES, cables like that are completely not worth it. No disrespect, but that is a bigger scam than beats

Well, since beats is agonizing, we might switch over to talk about other scams in the audio market, fooling some with suggestion. Overpriced amp's, CD players and cables anyone?

Or we could, like, not...

If you click on that link and watch the video, it clearly shows on the box "Designed and Engineered in Austria by AKG", followed by "Made in China (P.R.C.)"

Unless AKG also has one of those marketing methods like Japan, where Made in Japan electronics (or Made in Austria in AKG's case) are only sold in Japan (and in parts of Europe in AKG's case). Though as long as the parts used are identical (unlike Japanese televisions, cameras, etc.) there shouldn't be much difference in quality... Made in China can be amazing; depends on how strict the quality control the company wants to keep.

Come on mikiphile. hifiguy bought that recently, and since it's "discontinued" in the NA and he bought it direct from Harman, most probably that's the latest batch from the production line or something.

Actually, I think you guys in the US are unlucky. Cos mine are definitely Made in Austria. On the video, it clrearly says made in china. Exactly where it is written on the box, on mine says Made in Austria

. On the headphones themselves next to AKG it is written "Made in Austria"

Im pretty sure the headphones made for the US market are made in china, and that explains the prices in the US. In Europe, they are more expensive. If they had been made in Austria, they would have been much more expensive in the US. And since AKG's US market is not so important, the series such as K/Q 70X which are made in austria are cheaper as well. Check their prices in europe :P

Alright, I got a great story that happened just yesterday.

I was sitting in class, waiting for the professor to arrive. There was a guy sitting a couple seats behind me with green Beats Studio (which made them look pretty ugly to me, IMO). Another guy walks in with white Beats Studio and he and I make eye contact. I could tell that he saw my headphones and acknowledged that they weren't your everyday cans. BUT, he decided to pretend he wasn't interested, walked past me, sat next to the guy with the green Studios and the most bizarre Beats-related conversation I had ever heard ensued:

Green Beats Guy: Yo, you got the Dre's too? They're the best, man.
White Beats Guy: Yeah, and I only got them for, like, $60!
GBG: What?? Shutup, I paid $300 for mine!
WBG: Haha, you must have gotten ripped off, that sucks!

At this point I stood up and walked over to the two guys and told them to try each-other's. They asked why, and I said that I just wanted to test something. They swapped 'phones and put them on and not even after 10 seconds of listening, the guy wearing the Green Beats made a face like 'Oh god, these are terrible.' and the guy with the White ones looked like he was in heaven.

They took them off again and traded again and then it went like:

WBG: Well...no wonder you paid so much! They sound amazing!
GBG: I think YOU'RE the one that got ripped off, bro, those sound awful.
Me: *Shaking the WBG's hand* Congratulations sir, you are the owner of an authentic pair of Fake Beats.
WBG: Fake?!
Me: Yeah, they make Fake Dr. Dre's to rip people off, moreso than they already do with the real ones.

At this point WBG was just crushed. I told him that if he would like, I'd be more than happy to talk headphones with him and help him find something great, no matter how much he was willing to spend. He ignored me then, but after class got out, he approached me and we talked headphones for a good whole hour. I helped him decide on getting a pair of XB1000's.

He was actually a great guy who just didn't know much about headphones. I also wrote down a large list of other headphones in a variety of price ranges for him in the future.

Godspeed to you, WBG, may a bright future of audiophilia await you.

Hats off to you Leon Dota, that was a proper way of educating a headphones user who just didn't know better :)

good man!
But I have a little remark.
His wearing studios etc - guess his using them DAILY at school on the go...
The XB1K's are NOT portable in ANY WAY shape or form lol.

If i were you, I would suggest him to get the XB1k's for home, and the XB500's for portable use.
Or if anything, some IEM's

Takes too much time, not enough responses, and floods forums. Might as well stick to one thread, could rename this "Beats By Dre stories, and other overpriced audio gear"

Nah. That's not what I intended this thread for, but everyone has their own ideas on what it was intended for, so.... I won't rename it.

Also, how does starting a new thread "take too much time"? And if the subject for the thread is interesting, people will come.

Why aren't the XB1000 portable? They might be bulky, but they can be driven from portable gear. I for one don't have issues of being outdoors with full sized cans. And since the XB1000 are closed cans, there's not much issue with that IMO.
