Wait wait wait. Slow down.

You bought yourself a real-world pair of headphones for your virtual chatting service avatar? How does that work? (I feel old and out-of-touch. And slightly... intrigued?)

It's kind of like buying extra costumes and colors for a fighting game on PSN or Xbox Live I assume. Also assuming you know what those are

So it's like advertising for the real-world company? Advertising that the chat service users pay for? Like people who pay more for shirts that say Tommy Hilfiger on them or whatever is big now? Or is it just virtual items that look like K701s and Beats, sort of like how the Grand Theft Auto games have cars that look like real cars but are just subtly different?

They're actually just replicas of the K701 made by some random developers, haha. You can buy all sorts of stuff for your character, made by random people. But all I really wanted were some nice, familiar headphones.
Sadly enough, if you go looking for headphones in the game's "shop", you'll see literally hundreds upon hundreds of Beats replicas. Some that are even just reskinned versions of other headphones from the game.
So my only choices were pretty much Beats, Beatz, WeSC, B3@tz, Skullcandy, K701, Beat$, Ultrasone DJ1 Pro, and...more BEATS. It makes me a little angry that so many people have made the same exact product o.O.

Someday, I shall make an HD 800 for IMVU! ..Except IMVU is so boring..

They're just little virtual items your character can wear. Whether they also serve the purpose of advertising is something I don't know as I do not play the game nor know who you buy them from. But like I said, it's just buying them(probably for a few bucks at the most) for the purpose of customizing your character.

And I'm willing to bet that the only reason the 701 is there is because of that one anime with that one girl who wears them that I see so many avatars of. (Can you tell that I don't really know what I'm talking about?)

Anyways, interesting. Let's add an extra layer of zaniness to your original story then: not only were they virtual 701s and virtual Beats that were being argued about, but they were virtual *replicas* of said headphones made by zealous fans who are actually earning currency from the sales of said replicas. My mind is pretty well blown, at this point--and I've still got five hours until my shift ends.

Yeah, the K701 got really popular after that episode. I swear she was only wearing them for a few minutes as well, never to be seen again.

So I was buying some stuff of kijiji (Canadian version of Craiglist) and the seller is this high school kid. I ask him why he's selling, and he says he wants to save up to buy some Beats which are on sale (which is still way more expensive than the US regular price, but that's besides the point). I didn't say anything, but I must have made an ugly face when he mentioned Beats. The kid was actually almost apologetic when he said he wanted to get Beats. He asked me what kind of headphones do I like, and I rattled off a few brand names. I think this was intimidating for him.

me: so why beats?
kid: well... I'm in high school... you're kinda expected to have beats, but they're so expensive
me: so you're going to spend a ton of money on something just to fit in?
kid: that's kinda how it is y'know?
me: which version are you getting?
kid: the Studio
me: that one isn't too bad (still expensive though), the solos are wretched
kid: yeah the solos are terrible, the studio is ok, I'm not really an audiophile or nothin'
me: you know they're easy to break right?
kid: yeah, I know... I guess... but they look good... sort of...

I almost felt sorry for him; he really didn't seem like he wanted to get them, but I guess that's peer pressure for you. I gave him a couple other alternatives to consider, pointed him at some V-Moda stuff; hopefully that'd be blingy enough to shut up the Beats groupies.

Such is the way anime and video-game fans work--a more detail-oriented group of people I've never encountered (or been a part-time member of).

Makes me wonder why My Bloody Valentine's album Loveless isn't more well-known, considering it's rather obvious shout-out in FFVII. I guess it's all about the game's soundtrack for true fans. :-P

V-Modas are sexy. I think he'd be okay with those...and they wouldn't break...

Shoulda told him to get M80s and just have fun trolling Beats users with its super bendy headband.

Ah-ha! That is definitely intriguing. So most of the headphones that people would wear, regardless of sound quality, would pretty much be ones that they recognise. But I'm surprised that there aren't more people wearing the Audio Technica EW-9 clip-ons around. Because they are seen in a game(called 'Persona'). Or maybe it just goes to show that the game wasn't thaat popular?
Ah, this is better left for a different thread. Don't want to derail this thread again..

The V-80 and M-80 are most definitely the Beats' worst enemy. Except for when it comes to isolation. I wonder if the M-100 will be improved in this regard.
Now..if V-moda could just toss the M-80 into a few animes and have a famous musician(or rapper) say they're good....profit!

Oh, a little bit of derailing never hurt this thread. Just finish up each post with something about Beats and you're good. For example:

Persona, wasn't that bigger in Japan than it was here? I bet you've got all sorts of Japanese Persona-fans who wear EW-9s whenever they go out now.

I haven't heard the M-80s yet, but with how much praise they're getting, I really need to. Still, I suspect that I must be the only person who doesn't particularly care for their styling. Sure, they look like they could take a beating, and I'm all for buffer headphones. I think they just look a bit on the cheesy side--I'd prefer a more minimalistic/monochrome take on them, I think.

However, if their current styling is what it takes to make it in a Beats-dominated market (though, like you said, rapper endorsement would help as well), then I'm all for it if they sound as good as everyone says they do.

What about the headphones on the protagonist from SMT: Devil Survivor (AKA my favorite game ever for the DS)? They're pretty kickass.
