flinkenick's 17 Flagship IEM Shootout Thread (and general high-end portable audio discussion)

The truth is, there has never been a better time to buy one. The prices of TOTLs have kept on increasing while the SE5 way has stayed the same, the Euro currency exchange has changed a lot (since its intro) more likely in the favour of non-Euro currency buyer than not, and since no one smart  sells them, they retain their value extremely well.

It really is impressive that despite an ever increasing battle of driver numbers, the 5 driver and 6 driver (NT6P) is kicking a lot of derrières. It is all about the tuning and while the Katana makes up for my ex-NT6P, nothing still has replaced the 5way's exquisite tonality. Even the highly resolving 14 driver Zeus-R, which is my best IEM to date, cannot capture the naturality that the 5way does.

All this makes Nic's shoot out even harder to wait for. I think I am going to unsubscribe, deactivate the account and self induce a coma till end of May. Yes, I am that terrible at staying put! :frowning2:

Urge to buy rising....
I have been looking for a Natural IEM to upgrade to from my previous JVC FX-850. While I love my U12 a lot, I feel that it is still overly warm in some songs. Nic recommended me the S-EM9 but I think I'mma wait for the shootout.
Besides, I'll have to wait till my A12 ADEL is done.

I'd like to cast in some last minute votes, after my time listening to some of the best IEMs in the world.

Ultimate Ears UE18+ Pro: it's hard to describe how the new UE18+ excels. It's not a specialist, but rather has the tonality and cohesiveness that's just beyond anything I've heard thus far.

Unique Melody Legacy: a little hard to procure due to its exclusivity (only available in one shop in Singapore), the Legacy is based off the Maestro's design and retuned to be slightly more "friendly". To my ears, it's reminiscent of the Jomo Samba, taking the best aspects of reference and musicality and mixed into a well-balanced package.

Rhines Stage 7: Mids will never sound the same since my time with the Stage 7. Vocals and instruments are lively, bold and sweet as honey. It would be in my sights if not for the customer service horror stories.

I wouldn't necessarily consider the S-EM9 a natural iem, that was based on your request for an iem with enhanced bass and a clean sound suitable for pop music. For a natural iem the Aether might be a better fit for instance. But if you're not in a hurry you could wait for the shootout.

Definitely waiting for the shootout.
I wasn't saying that you classified the S-EM9 as natural. My previous was extremely poorly written and I mixed 2 different scenarios into one: Me wanting a natural IEM and your recommendation for a pop IEM.
S-EM9 might be a better choice for pop than say a natural IEM and I won't know until I have tried both. S-EM9s seem to be in rather short supply over at the trade forums. :/

I was toying with the Idea of selling, since I'd ordered my first CIEM and laptop getting a bit fritzy, but then the CIEM turned out to be pretty disappointing.

I'd also ordered S-EM9 blind, but I didnt' realize how lucky it was that I actually liked it, till I threw away $1000 on that CIEM

Which CIEM would that be? Can you please elaborate on what you liked/didn't like about both? I am heavily considering S-EM9 atm

Spartan ADEL, not bad per se, I just don't like the tuning & ridiculous sensitivity & grainy treble (& floppy module as mentioned elsewhere). Doesn't realy compare to S-EM9, I even prefer Q-Jays (though tbh I use those more than even S-EM9).

I think other people including flickenick have written up S-EM9 much better than I can.

Got a reply from Grezegorz. There won't be a sale for Spiral Ears this year either.

Nooooooo....

But then again, direct bank-in to buy SE stuff gets a hmm from me too.

Or could this be (his) sales policy?

End of last year (I think somewhere in October) I asked Null-audio if they might have a BF sale on the NT6. They told me ''No, no BF sale''. A few weeks later, guess what...
