@doctorjazz of course you are right, I am just trying to clarify that even with careful volume management, it is still possible to develop tinnitus.
Yeah, i get tinnitus flares even at low or moderate volume from listening to certain asmr triggers, like ear cupping, scratching and from the noise while recording.

Congratulations bud... Apart from the Best Giffer Award, as @ezekiel77 pointed out, you deserve a standing ovation for the fact that you have completed one year without splurging too much on gears, unlike some of us here..
Thanks! As for TOTL gear... Technically speaking I did indeed manage to get through the first year without buying any. Well done me! :p

So guys, I'm a bitta hyperventilating right now.

IMG_20171212_145219.jpg

My Sony WM1A is just back from its operation, for upgrades. I went Full Monty with the PW 1960s cable mod offered by Music Sanctuary, the highest tier being 8-wire balanced out and 4-wire SE out, amongst other upgrades. And being in healthcare, I totally dig that they returned the discarded parts. Y'know, like gallstones.

IMG_20171212_145152.jpg

So what happened was Calvin (@Kozato) was a bitta late in sending back my Walkman, because he had an emergency to attend to. It's totally cool. I'd rather he take the time to perfect the mod rather than do a rush job. I had my trusty QP1R as backup anyways. So as a token of appreciation he sent a little gift along with my Walkman. I thought, great! I could use some eartips...

IMG_20171212_145204.jpg

Hang on these ain't eartips...

It's the EA Eos!! Holy holy holy holy crap. For being a wee bit more patient (and not being a d*ck about it), it's a very pleaseant surprise. Christmas came early! I believe in cable-fi and dipped my toes into it for awhlie, but solder-fi? Jack-fi? I hope to do some comparisons with the Ares II which I already have, and conveniently also in Sony 4.4mm balanced.

I can't wait to take sick leave tomorrow to enjoy all these goodies. Will definitely, definitely leave some impressions of the MS Sony Walkman mod once I put it through the paces.

Ok so this much I can say after just one song (ye ole Hotel California). It's airy, spacious, and has a very organic and natural tone. Me likey.

Give Calvin and I the end of the year and you won’t be the only one with a modded WM1A in your hands.

That's awesome Lau looking forward to your impressions!! Modded 1Z + Eos takes up 90% of my listening time, regardless of the iem. Fantastic combination, hope 1A suits you similarly.

Very proud of the THL team for putting together a nice little gift guide for the holidays. Nothing from me personally due to equal parts: lengthy previous completed guide, attempt to focus on non-audio related work, and general laziness. But check it out!

So I have a nice family from Hong Kong visiting me for the holidays.

IMG_0964.JPG

It’s safe to say the Galaxy never got much love from me, during the course of the shootout or after. But as a small group of the regulars here knows from our previous hangout, the Rhapsodio thread, the company has a special place in my heart. The RTi1, which I purchased second hand from @Kerouac in my early days, was my first high class single dynamic driver for instance. But it all really started with the Solar, my first true top-of-the-line custom monitor that I bought during an anniversary sale, which subsequently led to my first review (at least worth mentioning).

I’ve been in and out of contact with Sammy for the better part of 2-3 years, longer than with any other manufacturer. Which made it all the more disheartening on a personal level to rank the Galaxy where I did, since I know he considers it his masterpiece. Sammy views himself as a dynamic driver specialist, but also dabbles in BA’s, cables, amp/dap modifications, basically anything he can get his hands on. He likes to tinker with stuff. At any given time when you speak to him, he’ll be working on at least 5 projects simultaneously.

Rhapsodio recently released a few new models. Starting with a more affordable single dynamic driver, the $400 Saturn. The eye-catcher on paper is probably the Infinity; a 20 BA driver with 6-way crossover, priced at $2700 I believe. And also an eye-catcher in the more literal sense, as the clear shells offer full view of 20 drivers cramped together. After a hype explosion the last years, the general consensus seems to be that the driver wars are over, so Sammy is a bit late to join the party. But we’ll give it a fair chance nevertheless.

IMG_0972.JPG

But the most interesting perhaps is the Zombie, an 8+1 hybrid that does not utilize a crossover. I’m not exactly sure how that works, but it’s remarkable to say the least. Despite reasonable demand, the hybrid market is still compact in the upper-tier, with only iems as the W900 and recently released FX11 coming to mind, while Empire Ears similarly has something in the works.

Both the Saturn and Zombie will go on burn for the rest of the week, but as some ultra brief impressions the Zombie seems to stand out for now, providing a smooth sound with natural vocals and excellent bass. The Infinity is lightly warm with a bit of upper mid/lower treble emphasis, and a smoother upper treble. Bass seems to be fairly neutral, with a somewhat compact vocal presentation. The Saturn seems to have a very nice sub-bass impact with a warmer tonality, but will get back to it later.

Sammy is a good dude. The last time I talked to him he was so busy he just didn't have much time for anything, a good problem to have I guess. I would like to hear some of the new Rhapsodio stuff.

with all the new FWs and the re-wirings , curious how wm1a sounds compared to the old stock wm1a sound

I won't be able to do a/b comparisons for obvious reasons, but this was what I wrote about the WM1A.

So any impressions I have about WM1A, which I've owned since March, is done in comparison to QP1R. I should have explained that earlier. WM1A lacks dynamics compared to QP1R. But then again we're talking about QP1R's greatest strength so there's no shame in that. WM1A aims for a smooth-neutral sound that's easy to please and excellent for long listening sessions. Which is great because the battery life is excellent. Even via WM1A's balanced out, I feel QP1R has more apparent detail, and an airier, more expansive stage. WM1A has the note richness, more emotion in its vocal reproduction, and an overall fuller and smoother sound. It's also no slouch in soundstage either. Definitely not as fun as QP1R, but as a total package including UI, battery life, storage, and some kickass balanced cables I have made, 8 times out of 10 I pick WM1A when going out and about. QP1R is mostly grounded because of the dumb battery indicator (40% one minute and 0% the next), really a killjoy.

I'm about two albums in without any burn-in time, so do take note of that. The mod made the 1A tone more organic and natural-sounding. The biggest change is in the presentation. It's more airy and spacious, with better differentiation between instruments and notes. It's an effortless sound. The bass is bigger. It digs deeper, hits harder, and stays clear of the mids and treble, probably because of the better separation and a bigger playground. Another thing I noticed is the note decay and release, it's very natural and with a delicate touch. I'll give more impressions as I go, wasn't able to take sick leave. Curse this day job! :p

Really nice to hear about the new Rhapsodio offerings because I think the community is starving for impressions.

Sammy is nice, and he has some / a lot of talent in terms of tuning. However I feel that at full price, his iems are a bit overpriced. And I sometimes wonder if he doesn't know it and take us a bit for audio-fools. And don't get me started on the infrared stickers.

I gotta agree. I was sold on Solar because it was a cheaper 10-driver compared to K10 those days. The nuts pricing was from Galaxy V1 onwards.

Awesome nic, it is always welcome when you have a new toys to spend a christmas and holiday with. Really looking forward to hear the infinity impression from you, really interesting new line up there.

about rhapsodio, of course at one point I have considered them when i looking for some TOTL lineup. I have looked up lot of reviews and solar is really tempting to get.
but after some other lookup one thing that made me reconsider is the vast choice of the lineup and the type, the galaxy itself has the rev1 and the rev1 with different housing or something, and they also got a bunch other model like earth, RT1 i also saw this mythical gold rhapsodio IEM thing in the singapore lsiting website which i couldn't find any information about. Seeing galaxy itself has reach v3 now made me feels they have a really fast model iteration that with my budger right now is honestly quite hard to catch up.
