Luckily I have a great audiologist and she has been checking my ear to make sure there is no damage. The main problem for my recovery is that I rely heavily on music to help me manage my ADHD and so I keep using my IEMs as much as I can without causing too much discomfort. That is of course sailing very close to the wind, but is typical of my particular brand of stupidity.
This morning though I tried a few headphones to see what the comfort would be like and it was not as bad as I expected, so I might have to consider getting something like the Meze 99 Classics or Neo to help avoid using IEMs for a while. Will have to discuss that with my more sensible half.
You can try using earbud placing it over-ear/upside-down like IEM, and not inserting it all the way. Gently-placed at the outer ear-canal, so there is a small gap/space for air to flow. I listen this way whenever I'm on my computer. It's more comfortable/secure, more convenient to detach/attach, plus it bothers less when wearing glasses (at least for me). Some earbuds have amazing sound for their price. Alternatively if only one side of your ears hurt, you can just listen to a radio. I'm pretty sure your sensible half would find it cool. This way, she and everyone around can also listen to your music, win-win
