It's not just you, that soundstage has put-off certain users. I think solo-piano sounds odd with them because of that.

has no one of the former sm3 owners a problem with its weird soundstage? to my ears it sounds like not expending to the sites but miles and miles behind the head and down my throat. yes kind of 3d, but very strange. i could not stand that for a long time, because i got something like seasick. or maybe i got a defective unit.

I thought the SM3 had a weird sound stage, though not in the sense you had it. In my perception, it seemed like the mids are ENTIRELY surrounding my entire head while the lows and highs are in some distant corners.

Talk about extreme instrumental separation?

damn, if there would be a ba based iem with the subbass slam of the sm3 but more usual soundstage, i would buy one.

what about imaging of the sm2? is it also that weird?

Put me in the camp who loves the sound stage of the SM3's.  In fact I'm probably going to be another pair of SM3's (V2 naturally) just to have a spare pair.

I don't know what people hear in those 'soundstages'. Maybe I'm just lacking the imagination, but there never is any 'forward projection' or something along these lines for my ears, no matter what phone. Ultrasone's S-Logic stuff doesn't do anything for me either, neither did the HD650 or K701 sound much more spacious than the next open phone... that being said, all multi-armature IEMs have about the same stereo imaging for my (possibly crippled) ears - SM3, W4, UE11, SE530, etc - they sound all the same to me, as far as stereo imaging is concerned. Open dynamic driver IEMs like the EX1000, DDM2, FX700, etc do sound a tad wider to me, but that's about it for differences.

No, the SM2 has even more subbass slam and the soundstage has a more forward projection.

Imaging among multi driver iems is about the same, but the SM3 and UM3X have this weird imaging that's very holographic. Combine that with forward mids/intimacy and stuff that's suppose to be in front of you sometimes ends up behind you which throws off the realism of projection. It's a hit or miss though, this can work really well with certain recordings.

The subbass slam is only a tad bigger, the bigger midbass is more apparent though which can make it sound looser in the bass. The soundstage imaging is on par but the SM2s don't put you right at the stage like the SM3s do which enables projection. On James' chart it will probably be in between the EQ-7 and SM3 (closer to the former) in terms of projection.  The treble is still smooth but also not as even, still not fatiguing nevertheless.

I sold my SM3 and kept my SM2...so obviously for my ears the SM2 was better.

Uhhhhhhh, if only I could try them both..

You can get the original SM2 pretty cheap now. I don't think the sound has changed, just the shell and detachable cable. I would opt for the cheaper v1 SM2 to see if you like the  sound first. If so, consider the SM3 as having more of a forward mid-range...like three notches more forward, and everything a more forward, but a little less bass. I wouldn't buy the new version of the SM3 until you decided if you like the older version of the SM2, but want more of it in your face (i.e. the SM3). I think you would save some money that way.
