I calculated the difference, and the deal I'd be getting for the SM3 vs SM2, price difference is $50, so I think I will try the SM3 first as if I get the SM2 first and I don't like it it will be much harder to sell in the FS forums as compared to the SM3s, now i'm just hoping that it comes by next monday so I can get them before I go over seas.

Imaging among multi driver iems is about the same, but the SM3 and UM3X have this weird imaging that's very holographic. Combine that with forward mids/intimacy and stuff that's suppose to be in front of you sometimes ends up behind you which throws off the realism of projection. It's a hit or miss though, this can work really well with certain recordings.

Inks. 'weird imaging', I have never personally heard the Um3x, though what I really liked about it was the fact the treble was really unfatiguing, and that very mid-centric sound with sufficient bass, though now I'm reconsidering the um3x vs sm3 since I can get the um3x detachable for about $100 less than the Sm3..

Anyone who wants to believe the PFEs are exactly the same as the W4s, more power to them. After reading that post, I borrowed a friend's PFEs this morning, and did a quick comparison, and they sound hardly alike to me, other than they are both fairly neutral. No one likes a deal better than I do, and I have a pair of UE500vi that I believe sound better than many higher priced IEMs I have owned (the UEs cost $59 on sale, highly recommended). But when I compared the PFEs to the W4s I have), they sounded very different. THe main difference? The W4s are much fuller, more dynamic sounding, especially in bass and mids, and while the W4s are hardly bass heavy IEMs, they just sound preferable on every level to the PFEs. But as the cliche goes, each to his own.  My friend has all three filters for the PFEs, and I found the green ones (most bass) the best, but again, personal preference.

No doubt there are many good values out there (CKM99, GR-07, PFEs, DBAs, and many more), but my ears tell me that the W4s are superior when compared to the PFEs. $300 better? To me, yes. But as everyone also agrees, the higher the price, the smaller the difference. Would I sell the W4s, buy the PFEs and pocket the $300 difference? Nope. It is not, to me, a simple case of more drivers and more expensive is better. I just find them to be different IEMs, and much prefer the W4s. Would be interested in some others who have heard both add their views.

Sorry for OT. Just wanted to comment on that PFE vs. W4 comparison. Nothing more to say on it.

Haven't heard the w4 but the after a recent revisit to a PFE, the grey filter was the only one with the dynamics that you would prefer. I still think they  perhaps don't have the solid dynamic contrast and bass weight of some of the best but they're great phones. Can't know how they compare to the W4 but green filters is not what they're about. Had 3 guys that use their ears for a living compare the PFE to my current 3x price universal. All liked the grey filters and preference followed price in this instance but the value of a PFE can't be beat. It's not like they're a clear step down from any universal I've heard if you like the tonality of the grey filter and probably less source critical than things I may personally slightly prefer. Hard to fault but also not their last word as Phonak has a 2 way coming at W4 prices.

I would write a review, especially since I have custom tips for the SM3, once it comes in. But I would need a control pair to A/B. Otherwise, I'll let someone more experienced with other phones to review them.

anyone?  hmmm?

If it's about if the SM3 v2 will sound the same as v1, Earsonics said it should sound the same.
