...not listed, but omnipresent:

HD580, equalised as reference headphone

j-curve...

...did you have to equalize any sharp 3.5 kHz peak with the HD 580? It's conspicuous that most of the other curves show that sharp 3.5 kHz dip. BTW, I didn't notice any such peak by listening with my HD 600 using a tone generator.

Jazz,

nice. is this from the same source as J-Curve's?

i believe that dip is intentional. i believe i read that in another 'response' thread. i do know that most hedphones have some sort of equalisation built in, and that supposedly the K1000 is one of the few non-equalised ones made.

I've been staring at these curves.
No question there is a pattern in their shape for all headphones.

A dip about 4Khz and then a sharp rise at 6.5K Hz and then a drop again at 8Khz.

Seems like the shape of the DFE curve (diffuse field equalization).

There was a thread on Headwize last month where someone with Omega's said that Stax's do not do DFE and that is why they do not sound right to some people. He was using a digital equalizer to adjust. A very good discussion on equalization in general.

Link can be found here.

JaZZ, you are right about the omnipresence of the HD580, but what else can we do? Even if I had a calibrated microphone, raw response plots are very hard to interpret.

Nope! See the follow-up in the Methodology thread.

Philips doesn't even try here, as far as I can tell. Scroll down though, and you never know what else you may find...
