yeah the lack of a line out was what made me seriously consider buying an iPod instead. i guess i'll stick to using a DAC for the D7000s and use my ATH-M50s with my J3.
the problem is, i wanted to use my D7000s around the house and not just at my PC.

If you really bent on doing so and you don't want to spend much then consider the fuze. (Not the fuze plus lol that is a nightmare right now). The fuze can be had for pretty darn cheap on amazon and you can order it along with a fiio LOD (should be less than $100.00 for both those items). I assume you have a decent portable amp to use with it? I've heard some good things regarding the Fiio E11 but I never opted for it as I went for the UHA 4 and I have been very happy with it.

I've had the Cowon J3 for about 7 months now, and it's still working fine. I just wish it didn't have a proprietary USB cable. Mine went bad on me, and I have to order another one online at an inflated price because this isn't a popular PMP. It's also going to take a while to get here since I'm currently on the wrong side of the world.

I also decided to spring for dbpoweramp b/c I felt it would better find the data and cover art for my classical cd collection, which it did and 100x better than monkeying around with MediaMonkey, which I find to be a buggy bit of software.  Still though, by the time the file gets on my J3, it's anybody's guess how it will appear, whether it will give the artist's name 1st instead of further down the line or the album title, etc.  The composer is most often, but not always mentioned further down the list and is not the way a classical music fan would want it. I'm hoping still that sometime in the near future, us "classical nuts," would be better treated and not be so ignored by the world and that we'll have excellent software to catalogue classical music, as well as other types.
Anyway, forgive my digression. I do want to give dbpoweramp my recommendation by the very very thorough way it handles the metadata, even on the obscure classical cds that I am normally collecting.

Oh - the escalation has been on both sides.  I feel for GH though - he was attempting to help - I thought his earlier posts were taken completely out of context.

I bought the dbpoweramp license.  It never runs out, and with the multicore support and great interface, I just find it pretty handy.  Each to their own I guess.

It's popular among head-fi'ers, but ask the average person if they even know what a Cowon J3 is and compare that to the people who know and own ipods. I got my cable from Amazon, but I had to get the more expensive gomadiac cables that cost $17 before shipping because JetAudio doesn't ship to APO addresses (currently in Afghanistan).

^^That's marketing for you!  Gotta love it.  Heck the other day at work someone asked me what kind of mp3 player I listen to and I told them a Walkman....they seriously thought I meant a discman.  No idea that Sony Walkman is an mp3 player.  Sigh...

Does the J3 play gapless playpback?

has anyone made a plugin that enables crossfade for the J3? the new generation iPods all have it as a feature and it works well there.

I see no crossfade option on my Touch 4G.
