Campfire - Solaris

Even keeping eq flat, turning off direct source mode does eat up more battery, but it's for a reason. The player NOT in direct source mode has a more holographic soundstage. If you are looking for more openess, better musicality, more feeling to your music, turn off direct source and let the player and it's digital processing do it's magic. Late at night when I'm going to sleep, sometimes I'll throw on vinyl processor to tame the treble a bit and give the overall presentation a more relaxing sound, but even with nothing activated, direct source off just has a more engaging sound to it.

So you turn direct source mode off but you don't use stuff like DSEE HX?

I've tested it for a few songs and damn does that sound good! Thank you so much for this advice!

I really like the PW limited cable with the Solaris. PW Audio describes it as providing sound in the vein of its 1960s cables, but the limited costs $200. I can’t speak to how close it comes to 1960s, but it does sound great with the solaris. I find it dies give a little more heft to the bass (don’t expect miracles) and smooths the upper mids a bit without losing detail.

That sounds very good. Did you mean that one?

Could anyone interested be willing to share their EQ values if they use any with Solaris?
Perhaps in addition to that maybe the most listened music type and source as well.

I seem to have settled on a:
+1 db at 250(q 0.71)
- 2.4 db at 1050 (q 0.51)
+1 db at 10000 (q 0.71)
+2 16000 (q 0.71)

I am talentless with EQ but this seem to work well for metal music as it keeps the kick drum presence , tames the guitar distortion sharpness/harshness in midrange, and adss splash to cymbol hits.
Using DX228 Elna ver.

No need to EQ the Solaris on the WM1A or WM1Z with the DHC Clone Silver balanced cable.

Can anyone comment on the spout size for the 2020 vs the OG Gold? I know the shells are advertised as 20% smaller, but I'm assuming the spout is the same. But I think with my smaller ear canals a 20% narrower spout would help me with fit a lot. Thanks all.

was playing around with sony z1r and solaris 2020, and then i said why not try the sony cable on solaris 2020, i really liked it on solaris 2020. adding more body to mids and balances out the top end in a nice way

Cool - the more I listen to the Z1R, the more outrageous it's price is to me. I'll keep it, but man, that thing should be closer to $1~1.3 than $2k. It it NOT a $2k IEM.
try azla XELASTEC tip and u will thank me later, but go down 2 sizes of ur normal tips

What do you guys think of ca solaris 2020 vs sony ier m9?

Depends on what you’re looking for. I think IER-M9’s the safer buy on the basis of fit, price, and tonality. However, something to consider is that it lacks engagement factor - which the Solaris has much more of - and I personally find the M9 a bit dry. They compare like this to me:
  • Solaris has slightly less bass quantity, and a tighter attack. The decay is very BA-like, though.
  • I find the M9 to be more balanced with vocals. Visually, there’s some sibilance with the Solaris 2020, and I find that it delves into bloat with the upper midrange.
  • Imaging-wise, they both have very good, “holographic” imaging. One of my main critiques of M9 is that it images vocals in a sort of pseudo-limbo; they don’t quite diffuse from the headstage for me. In the general technical works, however, the M9 has a slight edge.
  • The Solaris 2020’s treble response is a bit rougher, more aggressive from memory. Both are quite colored, warmer IEMs.
