Beyerdynamic DT990 (ver.2005) Impressions Thread

Hi there,

Im new to the forum and the whole audiophile world and after reading TONS of reviews i pulled the trigger on the 990 600ohms.

I currently have the Logitech G930, wich i really like and cant imagine something sound even better than that.

But after reading so many testimonials filled with passion i will give it a try.

But i have a question Im afraid of one thing though, my setup is :

- PC with Auzentech Hometheater HD (supposedly with a dedicated headphone amp port)
- Pioneer SC-05 connected to the Auzentech by HDMI (PCM 192khz)

In wich should i use my 990 ?

Thanks for the help

Well, since nobody said anything,

NO, Asus cards and the Auzentech cant drive the 990 600ohms perfectly, after messing with them for hours, only my Pioneer SC-35 was able to drive it with no issues.

Just received my DT990/600 pair today :).  Incredible soundstage right out of the box with my Fiio E17.  Wondering if I need to upgrade amp though based on people's experience with something like the Woo Audio 3 or Little Dot MK III / IV.

Ok so I ordered a Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO Open Studio Headphones 250 Ohms today, but I have no other audio gear. I don't know what is needed to drive these headsets. I don't have an audio card/amp, basically nothing beside the phones. I have a 200 dollar budget and was curious what would be the best setup for these phones. I listen to A LOT of Electronic, Classical and Jazz. Any advice would be appreciated. Would the Modi and Magni be the best setup for the price? Would I be better off getting a soundcard and an amp? Maybe a Fiio E9+E7?

I have the DT990 250 Ohm and am driving them with an Asus XONAR DG sound card and they sound absolutely incredible. I don't know if they would sound any better with a dedicated amp/dac but I doubt it. I love these headphones!

I think the Magni/Modi would be a great match. I have used my DT990/600's with Schiit Valhalla and Asgard and I feel the rather neutral Schiit "house sound" is a nice match for the punchy sounding DT990s. At least to my ears. FWIW, I prefer the Valhalla a bit over the Asgard, but they are so very close...

I will give it a shot to try out the Valhalla. I believe my friend has the Lyr so i will try that one out too. I went with the Fiio e09k+Fiio e07k. I am thinking about trying to trade them if possible for something else. We shall see.

So after a two months of using the DT 990 pro 250ohms I must say I am amazed. These headphones are so freaking comfortable. I can wear them for 6-8 hours and they cause no discomfort. The sound quality is great when stacked with the magni+modi. I don't think I will need to upgrade anytime soon.

Yeah I was very hesitant to sell my old DT990s when I upgraded my amp.

I am now running a Schiit Mjolnir (balanced only) and have Hifiman HE-4 and Denon AH-D5000, both balanced.  They sound great... but for the long work day, nothing beats the DT990s.  Last week I sent them off to BTG to get balanced cables attached to them :)  Love my 990s!

Same impression and opinion as me :) (However I have them paired with a Asus xonar stx).

Based on your comments and PM's I have ordered mine last night! I got a killer deal on a 7 month old pair that have been kept in the case most of the time.  I can't wait to plug them into the Valhalla!
