Audio-Technica ATH-AD2000 Discussion (and Appreciation) Thread!

I'm now the owner of Aflac's pair of AD2ks.   I'm going to compare them against a T1 when it gets here this week, but meanwhile, I've been playing with them.  The sound is growing on me quite a lot, however, still working on the comfort.  I tried the 3/8" tubing that Aflac sent along with them and didn't like the sound that produced at all.  So tonight I split the tubing in half, and put that in.  So far  Iike that sound change a lot.  And it's more comfortable than stock.  We'll see if it's enough to keep the drivers off my ears.  Looks like I'm going to need to go a little bit thicker, however, it is amazing how much difference a small amount of padding makes to the sound!  My suggestions for others is to play around with it.

Yeah, after I tried the 3/8" tubing I didn't like the sound much at all, I think the 3/8" diameter just pulls the driver too far away from your ear. A smaller radius tubing, like a 1/4" or even 3/16" or 1/8" might have worked better. Other people have tried doing just placing tubing in the back half or 2/3rds of the pad, to imitate thicker padding in the back.

After I sold the AD2000s I missed the midrange quite a bit, as I no longer had anything that had the kind of sweet midrange the AD2000 did... however, I have no regrets, as that money went to fund the purchase of a Stax SRS2050A system. This is probably the first headphone I've had that I'd be extremely hard-pressed to find faults with. I think I'm in love...

Amp recommendation for the AD-2000:  Yamamoto HA-02.

I bought it due to its famous synergy with the W-1000.  But (at least so far) I like it better with the AD-2000.  It just amazing!!  A combination of detail and warmth I didn't know it was possible.

Fantastic - Asr tears my wallet open, now you want to disintegrate the pathetic remnants. That amp is a thing of undeniable beauty:

IME the phatpad mod reduces the too-forward mids on the stock AD2000, but brings out the treble to Grado-like levels - which is too bright for many. I might've used too thick tubing for my phatpad... probably should've gotten 1/4" or smaller instead of the 3/8" that I got. What amp are you running them out of?

They sound great with either the WA6 SEm, or Millett MiniMAX.

I found 3/16" tubing to be ideal for the pad mod on these. Unlike with my W5K, when I modded the AD2K there was no trade-off with the sound but the mod makes both more comfortable.

I retried the phat pad mod today. I got a meter of clear Ø6mm rubber tube in a DIY store in town. Last time I tried the mod, it was with black tube of about Ø10mm. Tube with that diameter altered the sound is a not so subtle way. (That's to say that my AD900 sounded awful with it. Ultra shrill highs and somewhat deeper lows, which both completely destroyed the otherwise lush mids, which the AD900 is renown for.) But – lo and behold – with Ø6mm tube it sounds pretty darn good. The sound isn't really altered, at least not as far as I can discern. If anything, the headphone has gotten a tad more comfortable, now that the drivers don't touch my ears anymore. Yeah, I'll keep it this way. At least for now.

LOL!!!

The more I listen the AD2000 + Yamamoto, the more mesmerized I get.  Really, I thought it was not possible to keep getting more impressed.

It is just in a different league of any other amp I owned before (those include Nuforce HDP, Doge 6210, Shanling PH3000, AudioGD Compass) and the synergy with the Audio Techicas (AD2000 in particular) is magical.

I'm trying my best to locate a pristine example of the Yammy's as we speak. Can't wait to hear the magic of these with the AD2000s.

Not a fan of Yamamoto HA-02 with AD2000, I prefer it with W1000X or W1000 by far.

In your opinion, what would be a better pairing with the AD2000s then?

To my ears, both woddies have harsh his with the Yamamoto.

I use the Yamamoto with the W-1000 and the AD-2000 and I like both very much with the amp.

I don't feel that there are any harsh sounds, at all, with either headphone but if Walfredo hears it then he hears it.
