An 11 Years Late Review: Audio Technica W11R review vs Beyerdynamic T1 vs W11JPN/W2002/W1000 The Best of Audio Technica's Woodies

I'm looking for a dynamic headphone right now to fill the open headphone gap while my electrostatic amp is in construction. I guess what I'm looking for is something like the W11R but open.  Any suggestions on something that is neutral and has wide sound stage? Excellent sub bass and treble extension is preferred without being bright.

If you hadn't already tried the LCD-2, that would be my recommendation based on the W11R sound signature. For a cheaper suggestion that's a bit different...a recabled set of HD650s.

Neither have a particularly large soundstage, but with the right gear it can be very satisfying. I would also test the HE-6 just in case, though it's brighter than the W11R.

Hm... I was actually considering all of those. It seems some people find that the new HD650 have a treble peak. HE6 is a bit pricey but I'm definitely considering it. It seems the Lyr is a great amp for it and cheap too. Right now the ATH AD900 and the AKG K601 are my cheap picks, but I might just say what the hey and get the HE6.  What you guys think?

Final post in this thread, I've noticed that the Sennheiser HD598 has a very similar frequency balance as the ATH W11R. The difference is mainly that the HD598 sounds grainier, has a different treble peak around 20K, is more spacious, less fatiguing, and lacks a lot more low end impact and extension. If you wanted to know how the W11R sounds, the HD598 is almost the same except for those points.

uh.. uh... looks like I'll like W1000 more than W11R then...

O... so I assume the AD1000PRM sounds nothing like the HD598? I was considering getting the AD1000PRM too.

for me? yeah, they are different indeed, especially whem we talk about about midrange and headstage.

some people told me that PRM and AD2000 still share same charateristic though I think it will not exactly same.

Interesting choice on the amp, nearly all the AT I have heard sounds far more lively on solid state, from HA5000 to Luxman P-200 and P-1u. Yamamto HA-02 pairing with W1000X is a exception IMO but nearly anything else I tried on it robbed them of their true sound signature.

Oh, which amp do you mean? I just use my Anedio D1 now. I sold the Woo a long time ago because I think the W11R sounds better straight through the DAC.

The W1000 IMO is meant for a tube amp.

The Audio Technica HA5000, the Luxmans P-1u (P200 is clearly not as good as the HA5000 and the P-1u)

HA5000 does changes how the AT sounds, I found W1000 on them extremely engaging and the female voiced on it is just deadly. W1000 on tube amp is far more laidback and the vocal just lose out on the sweetness.

Seeing you did say you are only using a solid state DAC now, I assume the previous SS amps you have used are not the top of the line ones. If that is the case, do try out some higher end amps, B22 and the Dynalo does sounds pretty good with the ATs too. I still perfer Audio Technica headphones with HA5000/HA2002 still, all of them just pair with them too well.
