I just got the Beyerdynamic T1 and I feel underwhelmed...

First impression is that the W11R is definitely warmer. I have read that the T1 has really great mids, but it sounds very dry in comparison. The T1 has very sharp treble...  Mids lack warmth and low end lacks punch...  It seems a tad more spacious, but it seems to be due to the treble emphasis and weaker bass...

I'll give it more time...

Interesting!!  Thanks for sharing, wind.

FWIW:  I had the Audeze LCD-2 for about 3 weeks.  It is a great headphone, incredibly detailed and with a beautiful sound stage.  Yet, it is so neutral.  I could appreciate it from a technical viewpoint, but never came to "love" it.  I kept returning to the W1000 and AD2000.  So, I sold it yesterday. :)

Now, I'm reading very interesting things about the Sony CD3000.  Has any of you guys tried it?  How does it compare to the AT woodies?

Aw man. I was planning to see what the LCD2 had to offer. I guess I will know at the meet though XD

At this point I don't know what the next open headphone I should get. I thought the T1 would be a definite open headphone love match for me, but it wasn't in the least. I'm afraid that the answer may be to get a Stax rig (C32 looking mighty attractive) or that I should just settle thinking that there probably isn't an open headphone out there to satisfy my audio OCD. I can't understand why so many headphones have such lame mids.

I also own a pair of CD3000, in general I would say they have a more detailed sound and wider sound stage than any of the AT woodies that I currently own. The CD3K's has such a large sound stage that some find it to sound unrealistic. To my ears the CD3K's has better separation and depth than the AT woodies. Mids also sounded nice but not as warm as the AT woodies. The CD3K's also has a brighter and more forward sound which makes them picky when trying to match them to the right source and amp. They are also less forgiving when it come to bad recordings and mismatched source and amp set ups. When matched with the right source, amp, and good recordings the CD3K's is pure listening bliss to my ears and remains as one of my favorite set of cans.

FOUND IT!!!!

Ok. After those rather quick EQ adjustments, I thought I had found the problem peaks that I had trouble with on the W11R, but I didn't. I finally noticed that the W11R has a boost at exactly around the 6K-7K frequencies, though I could just be really sensitive in this area. This was the only peak that was bothering the heck out of me.

So there you go, the W11R has a peak at 6-7K to my ears of which I have lowered 1.4 db. I don't need to run my tubes to make them sound tolerable for me anymore.

Sounds about right to me. 7K is where the W11JPN's peak was located too. I had no tube amp at the time I owned them, so I found EQ was necessary for long-term listening. I had to lower that peak a few decibals though. My hearing is very sensitive in that area too, it isn't just you.

Sorry to hear you didn't like the T1 wind. They sounded pretty good when I heard them, but this was out of both an amp and source I am unfamiliar with. I didn't find them overly bright, there was no lack of treble but it mostly sounded smooth. Come to think of it, I was listening to an older classical recording on them which sounds a bit warm to begin with, so maybe this had something to do with my impressions.

I have never heard the CD3000 but I did own the CD1700 which is a nice headphone for anyone who cares. They too had a very wide soundstage, wider than any of the woodies, but the depth of the soundstage was only a little better than that of the W1000. They were lacking a bit in terms of bass and treble extension, and in regards to detail they lagged only slightly behind the W11JPN. The mids are similar to the JPNs also but with slightly less body and without the peakiness mentioned above. I liked them more than the W1000/W10LTD/W100 and would rank them pretty close to the W11JPN overall. The CD3K from what I gather sounds very different of course.

Thanks for the info on the C3000, warubozu and CFabian!!

My interest on it comes from liking the bio-celulose Creative Lab Aurvania.

That said, I've head the might Sony R-10 in today's meet and I was underwhelmed. :)  The W1000 is still better than also everything I've heard today.  "Almost" covers the W1000X and n3erling's Stax... :)

Hey Walfredo! I wanted to meet you but I left early because I needed to continue my studies. It really was a great meet though. Pretty much all the best headphones were there. Surprisingly no closed headphones. I agree with you about the bass-light R10. I expected the R10 to be the most spacious and resolving closed headphones ever made, but it's not even a closed headphone and it doesn't seem to compete as well as some other open headphones. I found it too bright sounding and the bass was unsatisfactory. The sub bass was almost inaudible and had no impact, though it had incredibly clarity still. I fell in love with n3rdling's Stax though. =)

It's not a bad headphone, but they pop up several times a year on Yahoo Auctions Japan and can be had there for much less, even factoring in commission fees and such. Its overall tone is similar to the W11R, but they don't have the same magic with vocals that the W11R or other woodies do. At the same time they lack the W11R's upper mids peak, so for someone who is looking for an all-rounder they may be a better choice than the W11R in some respects. However they are not quite as resolving as the W11R (they are more like the W11JPN in this respect) and the treble on the LTD does not extend as far. Their bass is quite nice and sounds well-balanced.

Exactly my impressions, wind.

And I missed meeting you.  I had  to take the kids around and only made it near noon.  It was an awesome meeting.

Tempting... but I'm so impressed by the W1000X after the meeting.  I guess they will have to go first. :)

They sure are stunning phones -- I'd be tempted, if I weren't engaged in a fruitless hunt for the W11JPNs. My memory of the LTDs (heard only twice) is that they're a bit spiky in the highs compared to the VTGs and W11JPNs (I've not heard the Rs) and lack their richness through the mids. They are absolutely beautiful though, and this pair look to be in pretty good nick. Argh. The temptation.

Just noticed this, but I think that is the same pair I used the own. Anyway, compared to the JPN and especially the VTG they do have more treble presence, but they didn't sound spiky or bright to me. They sounded surprisingly neutral for an AT, but like you said a bit dry in the midrange. I still liked them and thought they were particularly good with jazz, but I don't feel like they are worth $700.

A review of the ATH-W10LTD done by overlounge a few years back:

http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/134834/audio-technica-ath-w10ltd-review

I agree that the W10LTD sounded neutral when compared to the other AT woodies. They also have balanced sound to my ears but mids weren't quite as liquid as the W11R or the WJPN. The W10LTD didn't sound bright with most of my recordings but with certain remastered cds they can sound a little bright when compared to the W11JPN. All in all I like the W10LTD and found them to be a better option for those who don't want to pay the high prices that the W11JPN commands. I don't think I would pay $700 for them though if I were to base it's worth on sound characteristics only.
