Amps that can drive the HiFiMan HE-6 planar headphones

After spending a couple more days with the NuForce STA-100, colour me very impressed. It needs some time to warm up, but once it gets there the sound is positively visceral. I rigged up a speaker tap so the HE-6 is plugged directly in without resistors. This is an aggressive amp, no doubt about it. I could see this being a bit polarizing for some people. If you already find the HE-6 a bit fatiguing and hot in the treble, this amp isn't for you. If you love the sound and want to crank up the intensity with no safeword in sight, well, maybe this is the wrong forum for you, but the STA-100 is still a very good amp for that

It's that aggressiveness that I like because it awakens the 6s. They can sound a bit thick with underamping. With the right power, they perk up and get traction with attack and shear presence. I've had the displeasure to be without the 6s for a couple months and when they came home, I was dazzled again by their performance. The love affair is hot as ever and producing waves of pleasure under the HiFiMan pleasuredome.

I've been wanting to try out the HE-6's for a while now, I've got a WA5, would this be able to drive the HE-6 to its full potential?

Hi.  One of the amps i use with the HE6 is a 300B set and I think it works out well.  I also use a 150 watt amp, both through the HE adapter, and the 300B does not feel underpowered in comparison.  i do not listen to real complex classical stuff on headphones, so that is where there may be some difference i am not getting.  And the quality of the transformers may matter here, and i have not heard the wa5.  But i would not rule out 300B set just on the power.  others i am sure will differ

There have been glowing reports of the WA5 driving the HE6 out of its higher-powered K1000 port, you may have better luck in the main Woo Audio thread.

I'm using a Decware CSP2+ driving a Densen SS 100wpc to bring the HE6 alive.

For those who have speaker amps to drive these, what do you do for volume control and the DAC?

I leave my speaker amp pots at 1pm and use my preamp to control the volume

If this doesn't spark an argument I don't know what will.

I was just going to get a reference 10.32 and use the volume control on that with preamp out.
