Amps that can drive the HiFiMan HE-6 planar headphones

I've been repeating for the past 4 years that the Lyr does not sound good with HE-6. No body listens...

I keep saying this too. I think it's fine for the Audezes, but you can find better matches for the HE-6.

amps that can provide double digit class A1 watts(8r) AND survive a constant  torture test for a long period of time with minimal distortion would be HUGE, and have HEAVY transformers and a shi*load of PS capacitance, and not to mention be overall EXPENSIVE(as pure cost of materials and not labor).... so yes...a REAL 8W amplifier can be a lot better than a 16W amplifier... it's not about watts... better yet, the wattage should just be a hint at the amp's power delivery capability but not the quality of said power, you know what they say about the "first watt" :D  , the importance of power is having enough of it, the rest of the consideration should go to the quality.
this sounds like the definition of how a certain canadian brand bases his amps on..just cant come up with the name...mmmmm huge capacitators?huge heavy transformers? Shiitloads of PS capacitance? Real watts? Individual Torture testing, (with pics to proof it)? Minimal distortion? Quality sound??? Damn...its on the tip of my tongue.. :D

I had this baby all along and have ignored it until now.

HE-6 just found a new friend.  It weighs a ton because of it's transformers.  57lbs. McIntosh MC2120 from Power Amp from 1976.  120W, can do 1,2,4,8,16ohm loads.

That looks impressive. How does it sound?

Hey guys..its me again....do u remember i found some weird looking 'small size' 80ties vintage speaker amp in the storage of my mums, that she gave me? Well...today i got the balls to open it up and lift the HEAVY!!! cover from this little buddy..and what i saw really impressed me...remember this is handwork guys!!! The guy who made this must have been an artist....look at the pinpoint soldered connections..look at those huge condensators and what about that transformer? Omg..and its soooo clean..also had a good look at volume attuator...thats for sure no halfords part..and looksie at those THICK cool looking viper green wires going to the speakers and some other parts of the amp...and it looks soooo new!!! Almost looks like it almost isnt used....could this be my find of the year??? This little amp is almost as heavy as my BC amp!!! Seeing how this little baby is made makes me remember how my BC amp looks like inside.. almost same religious kind of dedication for perfection...

Could 2015 be the year i found my golden egg??? AND ALL FOR FREE!!!!! :D

called my mums today to ask about it again..and she said my dad was very hush hush about it....it was changed (her words..my dad probably said: upgraded) with better parts then standard version...where did i hear somebody say those kind words again.... Mmmmmm cant remember who...i only vagely remember that it was about a certain black beast of a tube amp :D

Okay..here u have the inside pics....maybe u recognize some parts.... Ur the specialists :p

Ps..i found one of the two little glass fuses to be broken inside, so need to replace that one..for the rest..perfect state....oh yeah need to replace the powercord also..it uses old style connector thats not used anymore in europe:). No big deal!

And here a pic of a standard version of this little beauty i found..so u can see how much work is done to my model:) (thicker better cabling, capacitators, volume attuator etc)..remember is was originally only a 2x50watt Wrms amp if i am not mistaken :p

Edited!!! What ya think???

Oh yeah, found a little impression of someone who bought one to try him out:

Its copy-paste quoted!! Not edited by me!

-------------------------------------------------------

I bought this after having it recommended to me by a friend who sold hifi for about 15 years. He said it was 'one of those amazing bits of unknown gear that gets passed by'. I saw one on Ebay and bought it cheap. I'd never heard of Inca Tech, or this amp, until my friend talked about it. Does anyone here know of it?

It's a mosfet design, only 50wrms per channel and is very simple to look at - a bit like old Exposure equipment used to look. Inside, it's hand built, and it's in a steel box about 2mm thick with a solid steel 5mm front plate.

After listening for only a couple of hours, comparing it directly with my beloved, factory-spec Sansui AU D11 II, all I can say is ....OMG.

It sounds very similar to the Sansui, warm and detailed, but has even more definition in the bass - a huge surprise considering how awesome the D11 II is in that respect.

I'm going to spend some hours tomorrow listening further. Looking at this wierd lil thing next to the monstrous Sansui it's hard to believe it could compare...but maybe it's a 'David'.....we'll see.

-----------

just from memory of the english hifi mags reviews..the inca tech claymore was something of a barebones amp designed for outright sound quality..and as such seemed to be very popular with the minimalist music lovers back in the mid 80's - early 90's..
musical fidelity, sugden and exposure also made similar minimalist amps which were constantly recommended for those who put sound quality above features..
-----------

Endquote..about david he mentions...could he mean david vs goliath? Hehehehe damn..cant wait to fire this beauty up.....hehehehe

I doubt it.

For the price i meant and because its rare and costed ZERO usd for me, thats why i said 'sleeper'.... I didnt say BEST AMP for the he6 :D..as i still have to hear the best amp for the he6/code-x.... But if i had 20.000usd laying around i for sure would sent my money to a certain brand and tell them: make me the best amp for the he6... Am almost sure they would come VERY close to that...but i dont wanna spend 20.000 usd on any amp... So it wont ever happen :D

Ps..did u ever hear a inca tech 'the claymore'? Even a standard version? As ur very sure about ur statement
I heard a lot of 'high end' speaker amps in my time..but still am very interested...so i am very curious how it sounds...but we have to see how this little amp scales...as always i will be honest and direct..if its rubbish i will say that too..but something tells me this could be a gem...maybe not a trillion USD kind of gem...but...maybe a very good pAir for the he6/ code-x etc...at least its rare as fuuuk and handmade...... :D

Update: just to avoid any sidetrack remarks i edited that particular line out of my post so it wont derail the thread

Apparently I got mislead by the word ultimate. I understand that you are happy about your findings, and it's probably a great amp for the price you paid

Wow, I wished I had something like that collecting dust in my storage room! This is the Big M(a)c. They made a lot of great amps, especially with tubes. They still do but I am no longer familiar with their sound.

I am sure you read many posts about big caps and big trandformers. Just in case one of them is mine, I would like to clarify that this was only the second and less demanding criterion to me. The first, and more important criterion in my opinion, is the quality of the sound at the first few watts.

It is apparently easier to get a good sound with lower- power amps (SET or Class-A SS) with a few gain devices and parts in the signal path and minimal or (some insist absolutely) no negative feedback. To get the higher power, say more than 25 watts or so just for the sake of discussion, requires numerous gain devices (tubes or transistors) and more complex design with a large number of parts and often (though not always) large negative feedback and class-AB operation (unless of course if you can afford those class-A behemoth weighting 150 pounds and costing as much as a small car). From what I have read--I am a Neanderthal when it comes to understanding Electronics--this approach for power is achieved at some unavoidable sacrifice to sound quality.

My own recent experience seems to bear out this belief. The First Watts M2, J2 and F1J--the amazing sound from this last amp was heard only briefly under non optimal condition--at respectively 25, 25 and 10 watts sound noticeably better with the HE-6 than the Threshold Stasis 300S at 150 watts (class A (and AB?) sliding bias). Interestingly, all four amps were designed by the same person, Nelson Pass.

Amazingly, because of the HE-6, I am returning to SET tube amps introduced about a century ago. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose (sorry my iPad key board do not have the correct French letters).

Please add Mytek Manhattan DAC Headphone Preamp to the list. It handles these and other planers very well with a powerful amp and +-12V voltage swing.

Best Regards, Michal at Mytek

Yes.  I auditioned the HE-6 at a shop in Bangkok from this Mytek and it is amazing - the best I had ever heard them. Quite a piece of engineered art.
