Maybe by means of a tool with a bowed razorblade or so, it is possible to cut the driver out of his fittings without destroying the woody.

Some cracks & gaps in the rootwood influenced the sound in a quite unpleasant way in the beginning. Quite reliefed that they sing again.

Great work nickchen, the grain in the cups is amazing to look at. Definitely the best set of woodies i've seen.

What about the new improved MS1, anyone considering making the first MS1000i [img]http://www.head-fi.org/forums/images/smilies/http://hfimage.head-fi.org/smilies/biggrin.gif

Just did the mod to my SR-125...with some interesting observations

First off, with just distancers, liberators plus Bowls, they sounded muddied, and veiled, and very much like listening to stock pads.

With just the Jumbo Pads, IMO they did have an improvement over bowl pads, nothing to write home about.

Combining the two did create some magic. At first, it sounded a bit off, and I realized this was cause the headphones were not centered with my ear, and once I readjusted, everything synergized. It seems like due to the increase in distance, amping is definitely a plus.

Can't wait to compare these to a true MS1k

I never tried to "1000" a Grado, but others, e.g. Cosmopragma, weren't so happy with their efforts.

We've had this "readjustment to ears" thing already widely discussed in the german forum. Obviously the placement is critical for some, whereas others have good sound in almost any position. Maybe because of the individual shape of the outer ear or so, who knows.

I suggest some fine tuning of the sound while listening.
 1. Partly closing of your (too big) drillings may influence deep bass and treble in a positive way.
 2. A piece of felt placed at the bottom of the distancers reduces treble....
 3. ...whereas a piece of felt placed on top of the distancer reduces the upper mids. That is my newest finding, BTW.

I've even tried the jumbos without distancers unamped (drats the stupid hot glue was stuck to the fabric mesh and I pulled a small bit off the "rim" while dislocating the distancer).. They sound almost the same (not as bad as your OP stated).. Give me a couple days and I'll repost my impressions.

By the way, the Grattle is getting more and more noticeable under 150MHz, there's no way I'm going to send this unit back to Grado to repair (very tempting, but I can't stand being apart with my headphones). You think I should find a replacement for the fabric mesh? I am very tempted to peel the whole thing off and reglue them.

Do you think the rattle can be caused by thermal damage caused by the blowdryer? I've actually taken the headphones apart (distancer and enclosure) many times, though I've never directly blown into the driver. I've shined a pen light through the fabric mesh and I find no hair..

the "grattle" can actually be caused by the white mesh. Even one thread of that being loose could be the cause. It can also be the driver itself being creased. The way to solve that is the "suck method" mentioned earlier. If that is the problem you actually will hear a pop.

Still no pictorial on how to remove the transducer, eh?

I've read somewhere about voice coils being very susceptible to thermal damage. What should I be looking out for if there's thermal damage to the voice coil?

Possible. Due to quality spreads, MS1 have quite a noticeable bandwidth of "how to sound". I have also heared at least one MS1 that sounded good when it was equipped with jumbos without distancers. But all others I tried (a dozen or so) sounded like crap without distancers.

Hope thats not sarcasm.. Pictorials would totally help! Hard to read "manuals" that doesn't come with pictures.
