Alessandro MS1000 and MS Ultimate - DIY & modding [56K warning]

They are simply glued onto the inner surface, by means of superglue or blue tac (the latter is more reversible)

I doubt that different woods would have a major effect on the sound, as everything inside a distancer is covered with felt. I don't have bat ears though, those who claim to hear "night & day differences" between amps and cables may come to other conclusions.

Thanks to needmorstuff from head-fi I had a chance to repair my MS-1s and transform them into MS1000. Listening to it as we speak.
The sound is very nice though a tad bright and the mids seem to be sucked out a little. Time for making some holes in the distancer.

Oh, I thought the deal was planned vice versa originally

Indeed the holes have to be drilled, and the complete felt package is quite eminent.

I have been cutting some felt to fit on the drivers and I think that tamed the sound a little. I need to check on the different drill sizes I have.
The amount of air and soundstage the MS1000 brings is really astonishing. There are things that are easier to pick up on the MS1000 than on the DT880s. Not to say it is harder to hear on the DT880s but the MS1000 delivers it more prominently. It is noticed a bit quicker. I can only imagine what the Ultimate must sound like.

Hope you have also covered the...ummmh...inner wood circle of the distancers with felt.

The Ultimate sounds similar to what you hear right now, but much smoother (upper mids & treble) and with more "audiophile" resolution. If I put on my MS1K, it's a bit shriller and has more midfi "rounded edges".

Yes, I have the inner circle covered with one layer of felt and also the driver is covered with the same felt. Attached is a picture.

Genious thought, I'm sure the neon flashing lights will lift the SQ gain of a recable job to a completely new level...

I already have plans for a recable and a woody. I tried the Beyer band from my DT880s but I didn't really find it more comfortable.

Noxter has put four of those self-adhesive HD25 pad thingies onto his MS1K, quite comfortable & cool looks. Not exactly cheap though.

I do not really like the looks of the HD25 pads. The Beyer band is very nice but I think the Sennheiser pads are great:

I really love the soft headband. I wonder if this is possible with an SR 225? Ahh, a woodied version, should look and sound cool!

According to Nickchen the mods works best on the Alessandro MS-1 and MS-Pro but Kees did a mod very similar to Nickchen's with good results.
Try searching for his mod. It is here somewhere. I believe it is called 'yet another 325i mod'. There is also a post in this thread where Kees talks about his mod iirc.

I meanwhile got to the conclusion that I wouldn't mod a Grado they way described here. IMO a Grado sounds acceptable with undrilled distancers and stock bowls. A question of taste finally.

So I drilled 4x1.5mm holes in the distancer today so my MS1000 are fertig.

The soundstage and amount of air really steals the show. I am listening to some soundtracks from The Blues Brothers and pretty much all the things that the MS-1 excel with are present but with the added soundstage and air. Very nice indeed and gives some depth and credibility to the music.
Blues and folk seem to really benefit from this as Bob Dylan gets even better as well. You would think the sound would get less intimate but that is clearly not the case. All the emotion is there.
Have not tried many other genres as I am going to a mate but the overall mod is definitely worth wile. Thank you nickchen.
