Same here. The material of the pads affect sonic characteristics. It's not just distance or shape of pads. The memory foam is different from the standard velour.

Same thing when using the pleather pads on the HE-400 vs Velour, or the same with the AX720 which came with both types of pads.

Totally agree. I put the flat K601 pads on my Q701 once and it just got less bass and a thinner sound.
This is what gave me the idea that K701 and K601 pads are less bassy than the Q701 and K702 pads.

Even K701 pads on my Q701 ruined it. I have to admit though that these K701 pads were so worn that I couldn't tell which side was angled.
They were much softer than the Q701 pads and not as hard.

K601 pads on the Q701 also make the mids too shouty. It's hard to notice at first. I couldn't live with the K601 pads on the Q701.
It's possible if the K702 angled pads are really different than K701/K601 pads, then flat K702 pads MIGHT work. Too bad they don't exist unless you sit on a pair for a month.

Someone should also try K702 or Q701 (same part#) pads on the K701 and see if they get an increase of bass.

You could be allergic to some compound used on the band (dye, conditioner?)   Maybe wear them on your forearm while watching TV for an hour (middle of band resting on arm as it would on your red spotted head)? Just a (perhaps weird) idea.

It was worth a shot but nothing happened to my arm during the test. I did wipe the band down to make sure. I really think it just takes time to loosen the band up to mold to my head. I have sometime tonight to play so I will see how it goes and post a pic of the spot if it comes back.

How long does it normally take Frank @ AKG ( frank.rodriguez@harman.com) to respond to emails?

I emailed him 3 days ago wanting to order some K702/Q701 pads and he hasn't responded yet...

No idea but I called and he picks up immediately. You might need to do that. I remember once leaving a message and he called me back like 4 days later. It was a bit weird...

Fingers crossed that my 65th pads ship this week but highly unlikely.

How long as the 65th been out? You'd think they would have had some available a long time ago..

They've never been in stock before either..

usually 3-4 days. He does handle 4 of their subsidiaries.  But yeah... weird they don't have stock in yet; been two months since I first asked about them, pretty soon after 65's were released.

Ok, I'll wait a day or two then try again.

I think the Anniversaries were announced as early as September 2012, but I don't think they were released or buy-able until sometime in 2013.

He just replied to me.

Great price on the K702/Q701 pads at $10.40 each, with free shipping!

Quick, someone buy a pair for their K701 (not K702/Q701) and see if they sound different than stock K701 pads!
Maybe they will give you 1% more bass. I've always had a feeling they were slightly bassier/warmer than stock K701 pads.

That's really cheap considering even M50 pads costs $20/pair direct from Audio Technica.

I have tried them, I actually have the new black k702 pads installed on my k701. There is no difference to be heard.

^^^^^^^ :)
