AKG K702 65th Anniversary Edition
Mar 27, 2013 at 10:05 PM Post #2,101 of 3,395
I still have mine.  Right now, they're the best headphones I have for EDM by far (been listening to a lot of EDM lately).  I think the only way I'd sell my K702.65 anytime soon is if I found something as good or better for EDM -- maybe the TH-900?

It's been a while since anyone's posted impressions, so here's some more of mine

Other headphones I've owned previously in a (somewhat) similar price range include the K701, DT880/600, DT990/600, HD598, HD650, D2000, MS-2, PS500, and W1000X.  Out of all these, my opinion is that the K702.65 and DT880/600 are the picks of the litter.  If I were to rate all these in order of preference, it would go:

K702.65 = DT880/600 > K701 > HD598 > DT990/600 = HD650 = MS-2 > D2000 > PS500 >> W1000X

Comparing the K702.65 to the DT880/600, I noticed that the DT880 extends deeper into the bass region, but the K702.65 has more midbass quantity which gives it additional weight.  The K702.65 has somewhat more forward mids than the DT880, and it is also elevated in the upper midrange region by comparison.  The DT880 has more treble.  I think the K702.65 has a somewhat larger soundstage, but I think the DT880 images a bit more sharply.  Overall, I'd say the K702.65 is on the bassier side of neutral, with outstanding treble balance, whereas the DT880 is on the bright side of neutral with outstanding bass balance.

One thing I appreciate about both headphones is that they're very dynamic -- especially when compared to a headphone like the HD598, which I find to be somewhat constrained in that regard.  When these headphones hit, they mean it!

I prefer the K702.65 for EDM, world music, and soundtrack music (the latter of which seems to become more emotionally involving with the added weight provided by the K702.65).  I don't listen to hip-hop, rap, or R&B, but if I did, I suspect I would prefer the K702.65 for those genres as well.

I prefer the DT880/600 for rock, acoustic, folk, and classical.  I will note, however, that I think the K701 is better for acoustic and folk than either the DT880 or the K702.65.

And for what it's worth, I like the K702.65, DT880/600, K701, and HD598 better than either revision of the LCD-2.

When I listen to NIN I prefer my HE-500 to my Q701. Maybe you should give them a try for electronic music.

Now that you say that, I did own the HE-6 for a brief period of time, and liked them quite a bit.  I also heard the HE-6 on the RSA Dark Star the past two years at RMAF, and the combo is fantastic.  I bet the HifiMan headphones probably would be very good for electronic music.

The reason I didn't keep the HE-6 was solely based on comfort.  They were very heavy and had a pretty substantial clamping force, and it bothered me to wear them for much more than a half an hour.  By comparison, I don't find the K702.65 to be perfectly comfortable (like the HD800), but I can wear them for a couple hours before I have to shift them around on my head.

I think the K702 of 2013 sounds pretty different than the K702 of 2006. They have changed their drivers over time. Heck, I've got no complaints with them. I've owned probably 7 different pairs at this point, but changing the pads and then charging twice the price seems in poor taste, IMO

Maybe they do change the drivers during the production time, and maybe not ...you'll never know for shizzle. Anyway, I meant to their sound signature that win over time. At AKG they know the formula very well as they did in the past with the K-240 models (hp studio for the masses).

Elwappo, I owned the Q701, so yes, I heard a stock Q701. It sounded just like the one tdock lent me.

If people think that just because someone is selling headphones means they aren't worth it, you need to leave head-fi. Things are sold just to fund for new, unheard things. The D7000 is my fave headphone, yet I sold them twice. I want them again.

So people need to stop dwelling on things being sold. I might sell the LCD2 to fund for a TH-900. Does that mean I no longer like the LCD2? Really? Come on.

The Annie is an AMAZING headphone, and worth it over the regular K/Q70x.

So didn't end up returning the Annies within the return window because I got a little caught up with other things. Also REALLY didn't want to give them up at all.

Played around with the right earcup that was rattling... took it apart, both the pad and outer side as well and blew all in there. Rattling seemed to have diminished after putting it back together. I'll admit, I smacked it around a little (not hard) just to see if it did anything. At the moment, the rattling seems to be pretty much gone and they are sounding fantastic

Gotta give it up to the good ole smack it around until it works method

In the end... if the problem returns I can always just use the warranty from AKG.

Anybody have any experience with AKG warranty services?

I think it's time to send my AKGs to get the right driver rattle fixed, but I noticed on warranty info page they say, "This warranty is valid for the original purchaser as the final user only."

I'm just wondering if they're going to grief me over that ^.
I'm the second owner.  I've got copies of the receipt, but they've got the previous owners name on it.  Do you think they will try and use that as an excuse to back out of repairing them?

Maybe I should just sign as the first owner to avoid that potential mess...

What do you think?

What about the Fidelio X1?

X1's for sure! I've started listening to ALOT of EDM since I got these. I hardly listened to this before. :)
Netsky - Love is gone is just epic sounding!

I'm still wondering whether these can's might be any good for me. AKG's tend to have a peak at the 7k treble and I'm very sensitive to that. The AKG k701 is absolutely not my can. Thin sound and harsh painfull treble. Would it be better to pass on the annies or do they still deserve a chance someday? I might just buy one from a trustworthy store with 60days return policy but I still need to justify spending alot of money. I don't know how long my honeymoon period will last.

I had similar issues before I fell in love with anniversaries. At least try if you have the chance.

That peak to me isn't in the Annie. The pads flattened the upper range, and I can honestly say that I also had that issue with the non-Annies. Not here.

Consider the Annie the non-fatiguing K70x.

I also consider the Q701 the non fatiguing K70X

Anniversary if you're ultra sensitive to upper mids and treble.
The only way the Q701 could bother me on a transparent setup is if I was listening to the harshest and most poorly recorded music ever for about an hour straight.
It doesn't "fix" it by recessing the upper mids and treble. Even if there was no upper mids peak it'd still sound bad.
Luckily only about 5% of my collection is that bad. Some random Jpop I almost never listen to.

The upper mids peak on the Q701 is very minor to me. The one on the K702 drove me nuts.

If anyone ever gets fatigued by the Anniversary it would be from the lower mids or bass.
I've actually gotten fatigued by bass before! Not sure what headphone it was, but that almost never happens.

Ironically, I got fatigued by the Q701's midbass at times. I'm sensitive to certain regions of bass. It's a non-issue when other areas of bass matches that specific region that bothers me. The first DT990 Pro I got drove me insane, yet, the second DT990 Pro I had was fine.
