The Aeons arrived today (UK), order #10962.
I've got a problem with my left ear, which feels blocked, with a slight burning sensation and some tinnitus. No pain though so at least that's something. Subsequent to ordering the Aeons I discovered that closed cans and IEMs with a good seal exacerbate the problem big time.
Given the above I am only going to be able to listen to the Aeons for a little while tonight, even though I shouldn't. I'm playing them through a Sony TA-ZH1ES DAC/Amp (high gain) with a Toxic cables Black Widow copper cable with a 4.4mm balanced plug. I've also been comparing them to my Hifiman HEKv2 just to give me a reference point.
Comfort is great, lightweight, not too much or too little clamp and a very good seal and isolation. The holes in the pads could be custom made for my ears.
My initial impression is that these are good, really really good. The soundstage is reasonably wide, very good for closed headphones and has good depth and excellent height. Separation and positioning of instruments is excellent. Resolution is very good, but not overly analytical. They're not as resolving as the HEKv2, but I see that as a positive because they're more forgiving of poorer recordings.
I think the real strength of these is the mids. Both male and female voices really shine. There is a bit of warmth which makes them very engaging.
Bass is good. They don't have as much sub-bass as the HEKv2, but those things have massive drivers, so probably not surprising, even if they are open vs closed. The mid-bass is very good. I had the Sony MDR-Z1Rs for a while, and at times found the bass too much. I could perhaps do with just a pinch more sub-bass on the Aeons on some tracks, but they don't overwhelm me like the Z1Rs did at times, so they're preferable on the bass front for me.
In a good way, nothing has stood out with the treble. Nothing nasty at all. All good!
I also gave them a quick listen through my Sony NW-WM1A dap on balanced output with high gain. It drives them pretty well. Not as good as the TA-ZH1ES of course, but plenty fine for on the go listening.
I wanted a pair of closed headphones because my PC is pretty noisy, so I could do with the isolation. However, when my ear problem developed I had decided that I'd probably sell these straight away and stick to open headphones. I even considered not breaking the seal on the box, but temptation got the better of me. Unless the ear specialist that I will see soon tells me I shouldn't use them, or the condition worsens a lot, these aren't going anywhere.
Are they as good as my HEKv2? No, of course not given the price difference. They are however remarkably, extraordinarily good for the money. Despite the bass being too much at times on the Sony MDR-Z1R I've always regretted not keeping them, as they are definitely something special. That regret has gone now.
PS...damn, I used the word good far too many times...but they are damn good! The little while listening turned into three hours.
