My friend is looking for a new media player, preferably capable of 20+ gigs with an SD card slot (16 gigs plus expansion, for instance, or 20 gigs + slots) under $200 CDN. Seems like a bit of a stretch, I know, but he wouldn't be watching movies on it. Is there anything on the market, non-Apple, that he might look into?

There's always the ubiquitous Sansa Clip+ or Fuze.  An 8GB unit of either and a 16GB card can be had for a good bit less than $200 CDN if you shop around.

Check out the Creative Zen 32 gig. I have one and I think it's great. The SD card slot doesn't fully integrate, most people who have this player just use the SD for videos. You get 32 gigs of internal storage so that's may not be a big thing. Here stateside it is selling for  $129.00 on Amazon. I understand it's available in Canada through Amazon.
