Trying to find an LP, advice on where to look plz
Hey All, I am trying to find a recording of The Planets, featuring Stokowski conducting the Los Angeles Phil. My dad said he used to have the recording when he was a young man, one of his favorites, but he lost it. The particular pressing he had had a cover with a nebula and Stokowski's head... -
Can anybody recommend a good recording of Holst's The Planets?
I've performed parts of this work many times, and it ranks as one of my fav pieces to listen to and/or play. Admittedly I've only heard a couple recordings but they've all either been very well performed but poorly recorded or well-recorded but poorly performed. Can anybody recommend a... -
Holy Crap! Crazy Stories
Hey All, So I wake up about 10 minutes ago to the sound of the history channel show I was trying to watch from my bed, and someone in my doorway going "Hello??". I get up and discover two police officers in my living room and two more in the hallway of my apartment complex. One of them starts...- Porksoda

Argh! Advice on Multimeters
Hey All So I know there have been a number of threads on multimeters, and I HAVE read them. I am fairly serious about DIY, but poor. I am looking for a good meter in the $50-$100 range, and I'd like to get something locally so I can return it with relatively little hassle if I don't like it...- Porksoda

Dynalo/Dynamid as a small speaker amp?
So I was bored the other day when I was working on my dynalo and decided to hook it up to a small speaker I had laying around. It could actually push a fair ammount of sound, and I was quite impressed with the sound quality. Mind you, we're talking no more than a watt per channel here. I was...- Porksoda

Can you buy Jung Super Regulator PCBs anywhere?
Google didn't yield any good results, except for one place asking for $25 for JUST THE BOARD!! It seems to me that a board for a Jung super regulator shouldn't need to be any bigger than say a MINT or PIMETA board, so how expensive could they be? Does anyone sell them at a reasonable price...- Porksoda

Question about detatchable cable mod/sub-mini plugs
Hey all, I modded my grados a while back to give them a detatchable cable, and while I like the convenience, I find that the signal tends to cut in and out every now and then if I move around. I used a fairly standard set of Neutrik (I think) sub-minis from mouser. Are there better quality...- Porksoda

Questions about using a CD-ROM as a transport
Hey all, While rummaging through the basement of my school, I found one of those external 5.25" drive enclosures with the power supply and everything built in. I'd like to use it as a transport of my uber-system that I am developing, but I am unsure of the best way to go about this...- Porksoda

Yet another grado re-cable
Hello all, So, I decided to take the plunge and do some upgrades to my SR-125s. I put in stainless steel gratings like the 225s, and put sub-mini jacks in the earpieces so I can swap out cables. My first cable is an 8-foot starquad cable, and I gotta be honest, I HATE it. Now I am the...- Porksoda

Advice on designing/ordering prototype boards
Hello all, I am thinking about designing a discrete component speaker amp along the lines of the P-3A and the dynahi, and would like to have printed boards made up for it. My question is twofold: First, what is a cheap (but reasonably good) place to get prototype runs of boards done, and...- Porksoda

Confused about S/PDIF "75 ohm" specification
So I am making a DAC, and figured why not make the spdif cable too? Silly me, I thought it would be the same as building a standard RCA interconnect, but came to find out there are some special requirements for SPDIF. I notice that the cables (more specifically the terminations) are all...- Porksoda

Recabling Grados: Decisions, Decisions!
So, time to do some recabling! I am planning on putting in sub-mini jacks on the earphones so I can switch out headphones cables. I'm thinking of making a pair of headphone cables, one of starquad and one of braided teflon insulated silver plated wire, each 10' long. So, that leaves only one...- Porksoda

Modding the Monica 2 DAC
Hello all, I just picked up a Monica 2 kit, and have been considering a couple mods on it. I did some searching, and didn't find any threads on the subject, so I thought I would just throw it out here. See the following resource links: TDA1545A Datasheet Monica DAC (analog stage...- Porksoda

Any interest in a DIY-ers meet?
Just curious. Just before my first meet, I was all pumped to see some other DIYers and their gear, and was a tad dismayed to see only a few people with ANY diy equipment at all. So, anybody interested in a meet where at least one component of your setup must be handmade by you?- Porksoda

Why not use intersil buffers on the PIMETA and MINT?
Just curious why the PIMETA and MINT use BB buffers in stead of the more well-regarded intersil buffers used by the PPA v1 and by Headroom. A quick look at the datasheet suggests that they perform similarly at battery type voltages, but of course that doesn't tell the whole story... Just...- Porksoda

My feeble attempt at a discrete I/V stage
I have never understood the need for ornate discrete component output stages. As far as I know, these are the qualifications for an active I/V stage: 1. Take a current input and convert it to an AC coupled voltage output (assuming we are not talking balanced) with as little distortion as...- Porksoda

Reverse bowl pad users UNITE!
I don't hear a lot of reviews or comments, but I KNOW y'all are out there! I recently got some SR-125s and I decided to forego the headache of paying out the nose for flats and just do reverse bowls. So far my only complaint is that the highs are a little boring. I've heard flats ONCE on...- Porksoda

Where to get Toslink inputs for a DAC?
Hey guys and gals I am looking at DAC projects, and one of my requirements is a toslink input. From my initial reading, it seems like all you need is to just get a toslink in "thingy" (the receptacle) and give it 5 volts, and connect it where you would normally connect S/PDIF. First of all...- Porksoda

Series vs. Ladder stepped attenuators... discuss
So, I bought one of those $20 23-position 4-pole Alps switches a little while ago, and I have been trying to populate it. I got through the first two decks, and have come to realize that the contacts are basically ruined. Some solder got into the contacts, and while the switch will still turn...- Porksoda

What are some good DAC projects out there?
Hey guys and gals (know there are a FEW gals frequenting here...), I am in the finishing stages of my dynalo, which I LOVE, I've got my new SR-125s, and I am ordering parts for cables soon, so that just leaves the SOURCE! I've got an AV-710 for optical out, and an iHP-140, so it seems to make...- Porksoda

Bessel Filters in Audio
Hey guys and gals, So I am tearing apart my AV-710 to upgrade the power caps and put in a new output stage. I noticed in reading art of electronics that among hte filters it mention is the bessel filter, and that it exhibits nearly constant delay across the passband, or almost no phase...- Porksoda

100k vs. 50k stepped attenuators: what is the difference?
Hey guys and gals, I am finally getting around to populating my alps attenuator, and I have been going back and fourth on whether to make it 50k or 100k. I am not really sure what difference it makes, other than that if the previous stage has a dc blocking cap with no buffer after it, it can...- Porksoda

Does anybody use Creative Megaworks series speakers?
Hey guys, I am staring down an AMAZING deal on some Creative Megaworks 560 THX speakers, a 6.1 setup, about $135 shipped. At present, I have Logitech Z-680s which I HATE. The sub on this thing is so horribly unbalanced it is just terrible for music. At the price I've been offered, I could...- Porksoda
