I feel you're describing the Denon D2000/5000's, though they're long discontinued. You may be able to find a pair on the marketplace near your budget. Can't think of an in-production equivalent.

The HD600's are good but given the level of HPs and sound quality you're already used to you're not gonna get the "wow" that HD600/650/6xx give to others just starting their trek into hi-fi.

True, it'll give you less options but based on his use case it might be better to sitck to simplicity with built-in BT.

Almost any standard amp will work for this, though for best sound quality you really should be using line out from the ipad to bypass the built in amp.

Are you looking for the best pure DAC or do you care about versatility, combo units, streaming, etc.

If you set on using bluetooth from a phone, you can just buy a pair of powered speakers and attached them to a bluetooth receiver. A bluetooth audio receiver will run you about $20 and you can use the rest of the money on a nice sets of active speakers.

I would recommend you look into the AAW W500. I've never heard them personally but people rave non-stop about the bass on those.   EDIT: Oops, forget you said you wanted universals. Hmmmm, are wanting bass emphasis in terms of sound signature or do you just have a minimum bar at which is needs...

At this price range I doubt you'd really notice a difference.   All you're looking for is a good, solid connection and pick the connector that won't put as much strain on the cable.

No problem.   Keep an eye on ebay. I got mine in the mid-high 100s if I remember correctly as a studio was selling it as they didn't need it anymore.
