Any classical/string fans, can you name this piece?

Email the bbc - they'll let you know. Sounds to me like it was done for that part of the production in-house though.

Radiohead: Vinyl vs CD Comparisons ??

I'm not sure that spl causes too much of a problem with vinyl replay: given most home set-ups. It's the ground borne stuff that's the problem. There will be experts that can help me out on this, but the wavelength of bass isn't going to do much to a stylus that is running extremely high...

    Acoustic Folk/Bluegrass recommendations

Eric Bibb might be worth a look, particularly his two recordings with opus3. He's normally classed as a blues man, but these two are much more something else. I'm not entirely sure what, but I would stick them in under folk-thing-whatsit. Someone might be able to help me out here.. It's...

Radiohead: Vinyl vs CD Comparisons ??

OK computer is excellent on vinyl - heading towards reference. I think it was recorded onto tape originally. The pressing was also onto 180g and over 4 sides which helps. The CD version is fine, it just lacks a little of the dynamic range and richness, although it's clearer (and more...

    Screamo/old-school emo

It was a tad tongue in cheek, but I read the whole thread and then realised I had no idea what screamo and emo were.. I just assumed screamo was onamatapaeic..

    Genres too Specific?

This is the whole reason for having a record shop with a real person it it: you wander in and say "Hey-ho old chap, I rather liked that, have you got any more of the same?" and if it's no good you take it back and get something else. And you don't have to worry about genre at all: there's a...

    Classical Music, where to start?

Someone recommended Classic FM: it's by far the best way to get started. Great tunes and once you've got started you can work out for yourself who plays them best. As soon as it sounds like someone put eighty-five too many spoons of sugar in your coffee it's time to move on and search head-fi...

    Screamo/old-school emo

Umm.. I assume screamo is like the noise you'd make when you go to your wine cellar and someone's had the last bottle of Chateau d'Yquem 89 without telling you. but what's emo?

    Trying to explore European jazz

You need to start at the beginning: I'm very surprised there's no mention here of Spike Hughes. Although Coleman Hawkins and Henry Allen aren't everyone's cup of tea.. And for posterity, when this thread is ten years old and buried in a thick soup of rat music and plutonium heavy boy bands...

    It's not a record company

My main reason for starting this thread off was that I went to a website that does classical stuff and called itself a record company. And then I had a big grump when all their nice stuff was on CD, not on a record and posted here.. I've put some Mzart on and I'm in less of a grump now...

Chopin--why doesn't he get too much respect here?

I rather like the Studies, although I've yet to find a recording with appeal throughout the whole set. Prelude No 24 is a stunning piece of music too, and because it's at the end it seemss to get less of a listen and doesn't find its way into many compilations, either.

Jerome - I hope it's a good one! When I originally got Water Falls, I was luke warm, but the stunning sound gives a big in-room feeling to the music and really gives the whole thing a lift: a stand-out record of 2008 for me.. They also have a DtD recording: I assume you've got a few. If...

Sara K, Water Falls: superbly recorded and great music. I keep recommending this! :-) Available on various digital formats and vinyl. The label is worth checking out for its other releases too, including some Direct to Disc stuff too. Not hugely easy to get hold of though, because you...
