Stax SRM-1/Mk2 gain adjustment and power resistor replacement

Happy holidays!   So the old potentiometer has become very scratchy. My solution was to bypass it and use an outside digital potentiometer instead (I also changed R102 and R202 from 910k to 50k). The problem, however, is that my DAC outputs a healthy 2.1v and so the amp is already very loud...

    Stax SRS-2170 vs Koss ESP-950

They are comparable in price. Are they comparable in performance (not necessarily sound signature)?   I listen to all kinds of music and simply want the most accurate phones -- I can always micro-tune the phones to suit my musical taste, but if the drivers are not capable of producing all...

Stax SR-Lambda (normal bias) one side has no bass

I have a pair of 6-pin Stax SR-Lambda that's driven by an amp + SRD-6. The left side, however, has minimum bass. There is little channel imbalance or any observable distortion on the left side, just a lack of bass. I have switched speaker cables, reversed channels in my computer, even resoldered...

DIY open phones with Koss A250 frame: which drivers (DT880, HD650, YH-1, etc.)

So I plan to diy an pair of open phones using a Koss A250 frame. I am considering drivers under $150/pair. I know that DT880-600ohm and HD650 drivers cost around $65 each, but I have never tried these phones.  I had a pair of Yamaha YH-1 and liked the sound when I put the drivers in a MB Quart...

    Using a 110v/220v transformer to make SRD-6 Pro-biased

Just thought of this: If I change the internal capacitors to 1Kv rated ones and use a 110v/220v step-up transformer, will I be able to make a SRD-6 to have a bias at around 460v [230V x 2)? I am interested in using the amp with Stax Pro phones.

    Stax SR-5 pads

Where can I find genuine or high-quality (made of leather, not leatherette, that's softer than those used in AKG K240 pads) replacement pads (around 4 inch diameter) for SR-5s at a reasonable price (<$30/pair). I contacted the Stax service center via email, but didn't get any response. I may...

    Yamaha HP-1/YH-1 transplant

I am unsatisfied with the housing of my HP-1s. I think that it's too small for the drivers. I also want to try an open housing with those exceptional drivers. Does anyone know if there are vintage headphones, closed or open, with large housing that would accommodate HP-1s' drivers? I am...

    Beyer DT302, any impressions?

Those are vintage phones from the 70's. Does anyone know how they sound? Especially in comparison to HD414? Thanks!

    Koss pads for Yamaha HP-1

I need to replace the pads for my HP-1. Since Koss offers pads at $6 shipped, I am thinking of ordering a pair from them. But then there is the size issue. From what I see from the pictures, MV1 and Pro4AAT may be close, and so are UR20 and HQ1. However, I have never seen those phones in person...

    Koss Pro/4aa and Pro/4AAA

Does anyone know if Koss Pro/4aaa (the 70' model) shared the same drivers as Pro/4aa? Thanks!

What power amps to use for Electrostatic Headphones

For Koss and Stax phones with their adapters, what kind of virtues in a power amp do you look for? Large current, high voltage swing, etc? Specifically, I am thinking about building a gainclone amp to power my various Koss ESP phones (6, 6a, and maybe a 9 in the future). My power supply is...

Is 50ma enough to drive low-z phones? And another Q about v-swing

While low-z phones do not eat that much current, having decent current reserve always means getting better sound. In a cmoy set-up, can 50ma be considered a good enough output? I am currently using OPA552 (200ma) in my cmoy and that amp can handle +/-30v. I can buy either a 48v psu or a 30v...

Quad Opamps used as Duals to double output current

Is it a good idea? For example, in a cmoy setup, we could use a quad opamp such as LT1365 (output current: 60ma x 4). We parallel the cells so that each of the two audio inputs will be amplified by two cells. If this works, we may very well get 120ma output for each audio channel. Or, as...

    AD8397 vs OPA551 vs OPA552

In a simple CMOY (12v or 18.5v, I have two PSUs), what is the difference in sound between these chips? Has anyone compared? I need high current. AD8397 is hard to deal with, so I am thinking about OPA552 (gain =11). But sound alawys comes first! Thanks.

    How about these?

MB Quart QP55x headphones. http://www.electronicsbonanza.com/co...MB-Quart-QP55X In a Japanese website, it was said that MB Quart's headphones are modified Beyer phones -- QP45x = DT451 and QP95x=DT931. http://hobby.2ch.net/av/kako/1035/10350/1035023425.html No. 593 If these are as...

Monica2 Vs Zhaolu V2, any one?

They both are in the same price range and have good reviews. I hope that someone has compared them. I am considering Monica2 (powered by Switching mode PS0-- Zhaolu discrete head-amp (powered by a tread/steps). This way, I can satisfy my DIY needs and save about $50 over Zhaolu V2+discrete amp.

    Has anyone tried

to build a standalone headphone amp with Zhaolu's discrete head-amp board? (Sorry, I have to post it here since the Zhaolu crowd is here)

Blackgate C-type or Nichicon UPW/UHE for Input Caps

Due to space limitation, I can only have electrolytic caps for input caps (4.7uf and up) in my amp. The Blackgate C-type seems to be the best choice, but I don't want to pay the $5 below-$25-order-fee most venders charge. Nichicon's UPW or UHE can be had for cheap at Mouser. How do they compare...

    Cmoy with outside buffer

To drive Koss A250 and im716, which one is better: a simple cmoy with strong (output-wise) opamps, such as LT1364 (60ma). or a simple cmoy plus buf634s (2 per channel perhaps) following the opamps. My thinking is that buf634s may help the opamps to sound better, but, since they are in...

These two dvd players as transport? (for an Art Dio)

http://www.cobyusa.com/product/item....player&pscat2= http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=4810670 They all have digital-out and I somehow prefer their top-load "mechanism". Has anyone tried these either as integrated dvd/cd players or transports? Or, should I just get a Samsung...

    Recabling headphones (KSC75, UR40)

For the cheap cables, many of you mentioned the cat5 cable from radioshack. Is that the LAN rj45 cable? If it is, can I get it from somewhere else (office depot, walmart, or my computer part trask box)? Or there is something special about the radioshack one. Thanks!

    Adaptors for Ksc75 and im716

I just got these phones from Amazon. Both are great, especially at their prices. However, Ksc75 seems to have too much high end whereas im716 seems to have a rolled-off high-end and a bit too much bass. So I decided to make two adaptors: a 120ohm one for Ksc75 and 75ohm one for im716. The...
