If helpful to you, I think this might be a thread on your unit --> here Might be useful info in there specific to your Sony's functionality and other's experiences with it.
Wow, much appreciated, David!! Thought i asked a dumb question. It was actually discussed intensively ~ 10 years ago! Max out the Amp (WA6 SE) VOL pot and use TAZ DAC as a pre-amp.

I don’t love the idea of ever maxing the pot - but I really am not familiar with your gear/chain. Just be very careful with whatever you do. Perhaps consider a dedicated DAC at some point down the road vs pre-amp/DAC 🤷‍♂️

Good luck with it either way

I agree with this. All you need is to have that DAC reset itself to 100% output and you're gonna fry either your amp, headphones, or ears.

Thanks!! Since there are 2 Vol pots, will try two different combination with SONY TA-ZH1ES (Pre Out, DAC) serving as 'Pre-Amp: 1) fix WA6 SE Vol at 3 colock, this is slightly less than maxing out the Amp, 2) fix WA6 SE Vol at 12 colock, and see how the SQ goes.

Will try different combo and see how it goes. At the moment, it seems the Vol at the DAC (serves as pre-amp) side should not be turned up too high. If too high, it causes higher distortion. Need more time to play around.

Recently i installed a pair of 13DR7 for my WA6-SE Gen 2. After listening for a couple of days, today the left 13DR7 made a big 'Pop' sound and seems it was burned out with some gas coming out. I re-installed the stock 13EM7 but the left channel had no sound by listening to my headphones. Any idea what I need to do?

Check the fuse, but more likely than not, when your tube failed, it took a capacitor with it. Might need to send it off to Woo for service unless you're handy with a multimeter and a soldering iron.

Dear Woo Owners,

as I asked earlier about a comparison of the newer generation 5U4G tubes like ELROG ER5U4G to WE 422A if found quite a comprehansive comparison by an user (penguins) from Jul 2022 on SBAF.

Besides that he's also comparing other new Gen like EML as well as other NOS recifiers.

fun read though

Haven't got a chance to try those newer generation 5U4G. WE 422A is so good and kills any desire to try anything else LOL.

Yeah heard that, though I read in tube threads that the difference in comparison to the GEC U52 is neglectable as NOS. Nowadays WE 422 is at a price level where you can buy a new generation top tier 5U4G like the ELROGS. With that in mind and similar sonics I think one might try a new gen tube for some soundstage variety. As WE 422 and U52 are closer to each other than maybe a WE 422 to a ER5U4G?

For anyone looking to add a genuine USAF "Mighty" 596 to their collection (with an adapter, no less):

Fair warning - if it's still available by this weekend, I might be scooping it up, just because...

Goo luck!
@ColSaulTigh for WA6-SE Gen2, ever tried WE422a? Any idea how WE422a compares with Elrog ER5U4G? I am a big fan of WE422a and don't think any rectifier would be better than that (for WA6-SE Gen2), but may try Elrog ER5U4G (recommended by Basco) and compare to my 1952 WE422a.

I have not bought a WE422a yet. It's on my short list. Currently building up my 6J5 and 6F8G collection for the WA5-LE. Having said that, I DO own 2 Elrog 5U4G's and have tried them in my WA6-SE Gen 2's. I stand by my assessment that they are THE rectifier to beat, bar none. While I haven't tried EVERY rectifier out there, I've tried enough to know what I like. Yes, they are expensive (which is a relative term), but in this case, they're entirely justified by their performance. For the current asking price for 422a's, you could buy the ER5U4G, AND a Brimar 5Z4GY, AND a Emission Labs 5U4G....
