It's funny to read that thread.
One guy saying we are hipsters and saying apple products are not good, explaining how a apple enthusiast will tell apple products are good, and same way how a beats enthusiast will say beats products are good.
I have a very very small experience on beats products, but a larger on apple products.
I have a imac for 5 years, choosen first for the design and no antivirus required for the moment I met only a few issues ( a plastic part under the keyboard some weathering on aluminum parts of mouse, no hardware sofware issue, the disc drive is a bit dirty and hard to clean, third issue, and quite boring), I have never met same safe products on other computers products, when I compare to friends computers, portable or desktop devices, all portable have lots trackpad within 2 or 3 years, then the battery, USB devices issues, serious lagging issues, on desktop devices, less issues, but getting old quite soon, and the main problem is the antivirus, really boring for me.
I admit I'm not a great computer enthusiast, and not talking the bit language lol, reason why imac is finally the best compromise I found, simple, probably not the most efficient for the price, but a good challenge betweens results and "easy to live"
I made same conclusion regarding phones, during "no internet era" get some nokia, sony (pixel damaged within 1 year) samsung (no serious issue), then my first smartphone, as a iphone 3, I kept it 4 years, then get to a samsung note (because of the pen, because I crashed a car with -10° out, and removing gloves for tapping on iphone was frosting fingers, so I thought, "the next phone will have a pen"), I sold the samsung after the legal one year and now I have iphone 5s(second hand), best compromise between size and efficiency.
About the comparation between beats and watches, one guy told some interesting things, watchmaking is art, art of how handmade stuff can be well made and what technical mechanical solution can be found for high precision, even atomic clock or quartz are far better, it's not watchmaking, but another disciplin.
Comparing a beats to a timex selling for a rolex looks like a good comparation to me.
About car-fi ,comparing audiobahn to (early or high end) focal, but more brands like phase linear, JL audio, even pioneer, or dynaudio, makes me sens as comparing beats audio to brands like sennheiser (pioneer), oppo (dynaudio), ou other small good quality brands, where the challenge is more the sound than the hype.
However it doesn't mean some audiobahn products or beats can be good.
The only thing I am sure is comparing beats to water delayed milk is not the right comparation, because when you go to a shop and listen some headphones, many stuff is available ,and it's easy to compare, the main problem is to be able to ear differences and appreciate sound differences, I also admit the sound appreciation changes with age, when I was young (early car-fi era, 15 years ago) I was a strong basshead, probably I would listen to beats bass boost if I was still young lol.
Then I discovered trebles(14 years ago), and finally the mediums(13 years ago), and now I would dream of a pure linear "golden ear" device, whatever it is.
About my own experience, I listened to:
-beats solo, wrong basses, eating frequency range, bad insonorisation, where your neightbour can listen music as loud as you do.
-senn momentum, same day, same stuff same conditions, with many swithes with the beats for better comparation.
the senn is far better, more balanced, better on all range, but of course far better medium and trebles, and no ugly boomy basses, of course it's 40€ more expensive.
I get to Fnac and tried several headphones:
-bassy and boomy red sony for about 190€
-marshall major, quite strong sound ,well built, but really medium forward, I wanted to try the monitor but it was damaged.
-quite good balance on the senn urbanite even I prefered the momentum
-the best choice for me would be a AKG (on ear, don't remember the name, yellow color,a dn prices about 90€), that sounded the best for my ears, especially for the price.
-some "under50€" various stuff philips, sony and other, don't remember, nothing was really exceptionnal or average good for the price, but none was far worse than the beats solo.
-my oppo PM-3 I would consider it as the best compromise for the price, sound, size, closed back, portable device, and, balanced source compatible.
-a Beyer T70P I would consider as better sound than the momentum (better treble, more space ) but not as good as the PM-3, and quite large and moving on the head.
-LCDX, for the moment the best sound I have heard, some similitudes to PM-3 but much more detail, and much larger scene, but how horrible look, and heavy large stuff.
My own experience conclusion is the beats solo would be sold for 40€ at least
Most of them were tested on a HM-901 with discrete card AND on a AK 120II using standart output.
except the beats-momentum, made on a DX90
The PM-3 was tested on all 3 devices AND 120II balanced output, I would consider the LCDX as better on standart output that the PM-3 on balanced output.
Sadly it was not possible to listen other beats on my own sound device, same for the parrot zik and other "high priced" stuff, I will go back, try to find the song they use, and copy it in my device to make comparation.
I would also add that it is quite easy for me to draw a virtual frequency response curve in ly head, for example I just checked the momentum and found the 8Khz peak as I expected when I remember it's sound.
I would probably think the T70P also has a peak around the 8-10K, will check it.
