25 dollars koss porta pros have better mids , highs , soundstage etc.
They obviously lose on the low end however.
If you want beats alternatives with some bass there are a lot out there , ath m40x , m50x , creative aurvana live etc.
For a lower price also.

Everyone has their own preferences and hear things differently so it's not impossible.

Ear canal size, pinnae, even position of the headphone on the head can play a part

Extremely unlikely. Unfortunately the overwhelming majority of those who love to bash Beats, never tested the Studio 2.

I have owned CAL for about 2 years and tested the M50x. Neither is a good alternative to the Studio 2(which has better details, soundstage, etc). I haven't heard the koss porta pro, but given the price I suspect they're worse than CAL or M50x.

Bummer about the 'NC always on'...makes it a non-starter for me. That said, I saw some new ones recently for $119 but they're back up to $139. I expect they'll be at $119 or less for Black Friday. If so, I'll probably buy them, listen for a few weeks, and them pass them on to my son like I did the Solo 2's.

Even at 139 they're a very good deal.

A few opinions on Studio 2 vs Solo 2(from macrumors)'

I went from the Solo 2's to the Studio Wireless. The Studio's, in my opinion are 100 times better than the Solo 2 Wireless.
They are much better in sound in my opinion and reviews on different websites.

The studios, imo sound way better than the solo 2.

Amping for the headphones listed? They all work quite well out of my LG V20 phone (no external amp needed)...even the 250 Ohm DT990. Do some of my Beyers and Senns scale with better amps? Yes. Can't say I got that impression of the Solo 2's.

Well... that's one of the few phones with an integrated powerful(for a phone) headphone dac/amp.

'100 times better'

Usual hyperbole noting in audio or life in general is 100x better than anything else.

Focal Utopia is not 100 times better than than a pair of skullkandy ear buds.

You don't have to take it literally. The suggestion is that they're quite a bit better than the solo 2.

Have you ever thought of auditioning the Studio 2 instead of contradicting my posts?

Nov 6, 2016 at 2:05 PM Post #1,311 of 2,037
Where was the contradiction

I was merely being pedantic regarding someone else's meaningless tripe which you quoted

If I ever come across a working pair without going 1 inch out of my way and no-one is looking I might just might have a crafty listen and I will let you know my honest thoughts.

Likewise you can let us know how you get on with some of the alternative headphones suggested to you. Love to hear your thoughts

Yep...I always look for excellent value! ;)

I've heard differing opinions than yours regarding Studios...will see what I think when I snag a pair for my son. TBH, it's a huge miss to not be able to disengage the NC feature.

A classic headphone vs a throw away piece of 'fashion' Still and always will sound great

Can you see any Beats being around unaltered in 30 years time? Or even a couple of years. They have zero authenticity or substance. PortaPro are cool as well for those in the know. More popular in Europe especially France and Scandinavia than Beats where they know a thing or two about style and design.

HD25, B&O Form 2, Beyer Dt100/150 are other designs that stand the test of time.

I have/had them all (my Dad's got the PortaPro at the mo')

the ksc75s at half the price offer the same drivers and apparently better tuning, I can confirm they are hands down the best value you can ever get for $13 and have a pretty decent soundstage which I would not expect from something that sits directly on your ears.

The '75 have titanium drivers and sound quite different to PortaPro in my experience. I found them quite silibant and didn't like them at all. The KSC35 have the PortaPro driver but are pricier. Just my opinion mind

hmmm.... to each his own, I love my ksc75s but I will admit I don't use them very much because of all the more expensive full sized headphones I own

Well,...I've got to say that this is by far the most entertaining thread on this entire site.
popcorn.gif
  88 pages of passionate drama!
bigsmile_face.gif

When it's time to chill out and relax a little, the pages of this thread are fun,...fun,...fun to browse.

But then again when listening to K Pop you don't need much.. It's all the same anyway
rolleyes.gif

Thus far, this is the only thing I've encountered here that offends me: people bashing one of my favorite specific kinds of music: K-pop (i.e., Korean pop)! I discovered this genre more than two years ago, and added hundreds of K-pop songs to my music collection. The performers include The Wonder Girls, 4 Minute, Super Junior, B2ST, Big Bang, After School, Girls' Generation, T-ara, and many others. I love it! I downloaded most of it from the music sites Melodishop and MP3VA. I also have some J-pop (Japanese pop) in my collection, too, especially a lot of songs by Kana Nishino and AKB48 that I got from several places on the Internet as well.

This is in addition to the plethora of Chinese pop (C-pop) and Chinese disco (also called "DJ music" here) that I have in my collection, mostly from various-artist albums I got at a local CD store and then converted to MP3.

Anyway, one of the reasons I personally fit in better here in East Asia, instead of the U.S., is because the happy, sappy, bubbly dance-pop music; disco (i.e., club) music; and boygroup / girlgroup pop music that I've loved so much throughout my life...is much, much, much more popular here than in the States. Guys with feminine tastes are a lot more accepted here than in the U.S., as well. I can easily find friends here in Chongqing who share my tastes in music and enjoy listening to it with me, which I couldn't hardly find in the middle of America. Many years ago, I was all alone in my passion for '80s Italo Disco, '90s Eurodance pop, and the music of NKOTB and the Backstreet Boys until moving to China.

This all sounds phenomenal on my portable headphone rig!
smily_headphones1.gif

What do the latest Beats Studio Wireless and the Sennheiser HD 650 have in common? Their headphone drivers bottom out with the beat and go "snap, crackle, pop," like Rice Krispies when using my extreme EQ presets and Cayin C5 portable amp!

And this is without any audible clipping from the amp or EQ.

Beats can't handle the beat!!!

Last month when I sampled a lot of headphones at my local Hi-Fi headphone shop, the Beats headphones had a sound signature with more midbass and more treble, compared to my beloved V-Moda M-100s, which had more sub-bass and more midrange in the response curve, versus the Beats. The M-100s definitely had better soundstage and detail than the Studio Wireless.

While both headphones have a V-shaped sound (and thus, boosted bass and bright treble), the Beats had a little too much midbass, and their treble was a little too bright and harsh. While this certainly can be corrected with proper EQ'ing, the fact that the Studio Wireless (while plugged into my portable rig) simply couldn't handle the power of my extreme EQ presets running through an amp...unfortunately disqualifies these headphones from my liking. If a pair of headphones puts out audible driver distortion, or even worse,...if they bottom out with the beat with my setup, then that is simply unacceptable.

But, of course, if I had to choose between the lesser of two evils (i.e., Beats vs. Sennheiser), then I'd have to pick Beats.
redface.gif

Sennheisers and Beats are always on display at every music or electronics store. Both say they are the best. Thousands of people demo them every day. Yet Beats is winning the battle. When hearing both Beats and Sennheisers in the store, people are preferring Beats. This is a fact.

Sorry for the derail but just trying to establish that people love sub bass and the Beats bass in particular.

For the last 3 years, I've personally put no less than 40 different pairs of headphones on my girlfriend's head and she absolutely positively doesn't like any of them more than her Studio Beats. I'm not talking cheap headphones either. I'm talking Ultrasones, V-Moda, HD-800's, LCD 2's, it doesn't matter. She can't live without the Beats subs. P*sses me off like you wouldn't believe. Then she asks me what kind of con job they did to sell headphones at that price and I must admit I'm very close to strangling her.

I have many other friends that feel the same way as my girlfriend. I'm just trying to let you all know that these people do exist. They are out there, with bobbing heads and totally oblivious to the audiophile world.

I'm excited about my plans to attend the New York spring meetup on Saturday, June 10th, 2017. I'll have a table set up with the dual-listening setup of my portable headphone system and EQ presets for everyone to hear. (Click here for more details.)

Tell your friends and girlfriend to head on over to that meetup, so they can hear what I've got,...and get totally blown away with absolute awe!

I have listened to a pair of beats headhones that were on display at a local  mall . i think they were the solo 2s.

Either way their bass presence and sub bass extension is incredible i must admit but it bleeds into the mids and you have very muddy rolled back mids and unimpressive higs.

Low freqs are important to enjoying music but when the headphone fails in other regards its impossible to enjoy music at all.

For types of music like classic , ambient , folk etc I would take my porta pros over those beats in a heart beat and the porta pros cost 25 dollars which is embarrassing for such an expensive product.

If you like beats sounds signature over the recommended headphones at that price point , sennheiser hd 518 , m40x , m50x , phillips SHP9500 , creative aurvana live you name it , you can get so many headphones at a lower price point , and if after all these options you prefer the beats more power to you , most people on this website wont tho and thats just the nature of it , people dont like muddy mids .

The point is there are a lot of options . I find the beat situation similar to the people that buy bad gaming headsets for music purpose because they simply dont now any better and end up with a really bad product compared to what they could have gotten from an audio brand.

Open vs closed. PortaPros are useless in noisy environments. Also a know hair-eater. Besides, those genres are the one you generally don't listen to a bassy, outdoors-tuned headphone.

Again, those are open and/or over-ears. If someone wants a closed portable on-ear, you wouldn't recommend those.

Okay if ultimate isolation mixed with great sound quality and last a life time build quality then get a pair of Sennheiser HD25s.

I'm sure there are many more alternatives of closed back good sounding headphones alternatives that don't mean;-

a/ you have to a look like a tw*t
b/ you have zero individuality
c/ want to be a drug dealer or gangsta
d/ don't have to replace your headphones every year or so
e/ don't support a gigantic money making all conquering monster of a marketing company
f/ accept second class 'reasonable or adequate' sound all in the name of perceived fashion, peer pressure or vanity
