What should I get in addition to my AKG K-240's

The K 601's are looking very tempting, they seem to be close to the K 702's, but better.

EDIT: Only thing I don't like is that ear pad replacements are hard to come by.

Why do you say that? Is it hard to buy them from AKG? Not likely you would be needing them any time in the near future though..

you just need to call AKG and order directly.

Thank you all, I didn't think about directly ordering them. That's good to know.

I may end up picking the K 601, one thing I like about the K 702 is the detachable cord. (My K240's have a detachable cord to)

Will an E9 be able to drive the K601? I don't know, but I've heard that the 601's are extremely tough to drive, and the E9 is an entry-level desktop amp...

Some of those 'tough to drive' comments are probably a bit over exaggerated. Often there's only a very slight improvement when moving up to a better amp. I have a 600ohm k240DF that sounds quite decent out of the very low powered amp in the emu 0404. People seem to like the 70X out of the E9. dion't know if the 601 is harder to drive or not...

I think 701/702 would be a good upgrade if you like AKG. That is at least what I did. Also they are really cheap at the moment.

Do you think my source is good enough for a pair of K 702's?

Well E9 might not be THE best fit for them. That said, I just hooked 701 to PA2V2 and they still sound great. Though I think I mostly be using them for my vinyl player. Don't worry E9 is good enough. To be honest, I'm starting to become somewhat skeptical about the amps.

Don't get me wrong. Noone here is trying to sell you anything. And there are definetly people here with way more experience than me in this field that say that 701 need a powerfull amp to drive properly. There must be something to it.

But if you ask me (and you did) the AKG701 are a higher class AKG headphones and they do sound like that even with weaker sources (ok, after i wrote this I plugged them in my HTC Desire and yes they need some amplification otherwise they sound... a bit quiet ).

Also I just did a little side by side comparison and 701s are clearer, more detailed etc. I was intentionally trying not to use word "much" because they are both good headphones. And I guess that is the main point. They're just headphones. If you like AKG240 I think you will enjoy 701. If you think something is missing in your AKG headphones you should try a different brand.

I've heard a few different phones with very good mids, and imo the 70X mids are too light and diffused compared to some of the others, like the 240 and the dt48. They're also too tilted towards the upper mids and treble for my taste. In fact they managed to ruin some of my favorite songs, something almost no other phone has done. To other ears, they sound just perfect, so pick your poison. Best to audition them before buying.

Erm... i don't think the Fiio can power them sufficiently though...
The K702/701 is very very picky on amps. Oh well, if it doesn't fit, get another amp! Well, that's what my K701 did to me, and after that i got another and another and another and.......
