Westone ES5

Hah. In that case: I don't have much against the stock cable but it's like putting all-seasons on a rari :p

Actually it's more like changing the tires. Tires can have a subtle and sometimes not so subtle effect on a car's handling characteristics.

Lots of reasons to want to try different tires on a Ferrari.

You guys drawing similarities between the ES5 and a Ferrari? Since when was I so rich...(sarcasm)

I might just opt for a black ES cable if the oxidation gets out of control. I'm still not totally sold on the idea of dropping that much money on a cable, although I know nothing about what changes they will bring.

I have nothing against aftermarket cables. Some of them are great, but most just don't work well with the ES5. Sure, they worked for other CIEMs such as the JHs, but just not the ES5. I think this is the point that GG and some of us are making.

It is easy to be convinced that a USD300~500 aftermarket cable, some made of silver (and of course the prestige that comes after that name), will bring positive SQ benefits. I had my twag before I even received the ES5 back then. I immediately started used the ES5 with the twag. I believed that the stock cable was junk. The twag seems to bring out all the 'details' and I found the stock cable to sound muddy in comparison. Further, the Twag cost me USD300+ and the stock is just less than USD50 and is so thin and looks cheap. How can the twag ever be worse?

It was only after I became much more acquainted with the ES5 that I find twag, as well as many other aftermarket cables I bought subsequently, are actually doing more detriments than positives to the sound.

We are all after SQ, if not we won't dump such monies into getting the ES5. A westone ES2 would suffice for bringing to us the noise isolation and comfort the ES5 would bring.

Of course, nobody is stopping you from using aftermarket cables. We are just sharing our experiences with everyone around as well as the mistakes we made along our way.

What you are saying has good merit in that you have to get used to and familiarise yourself with the sound before changing anything over like cables. Let it be known that I am not advocating changing of cables for the sake of it, only if it makes things sound better. To me the ES5's sound great period.

Of course, I changed up cables to make things sound better. However, I'd prefer not to pay another $3-400 to completely change the signature of my ES5s, just to make things sound "better." If I really want to, that means I've purchased the wrong CIEMs. This is what I meant by my original post.

Hence my current iem cable, keeping everything the same but with a bit more [natural] treble sparkle, which in turn opens up the sound and image... a breath of fresh air?

I agree with you, I feel something is missing or veiled there too. It could just be the way they are meant to sound? The Fitear Private C435 from memory did not sound like this...

But at $2500 verses $1000, I'm not at all surprised or disapointed as you sound like you are.

I am quit happy to spend the $400 to "fix it" than fork out $2500...

I cannot concentrate on work while listening to them at any volume. It's "assault on my senses" lol.

I have to say that I can totally relate to this. I invested in my ES5s specifically to promote concentration while I work (software development). They are so amazingly sensational that it makes working while listening to them extraordinarily challenging. I have never experienced anything like this before the ES5s; they are so profound they effectively demand exclusivity of your attention.

Fit issues:

* A poor fitting ear-piece can cause an ear infection. While my right ear-piece was perfect, the left ear-piece was very problematic and caused nausea, pain, and pressure issues, lasting for days after taking a break from them, necessitating a visit to a (non-ER) urgent care facility, a visit to an ENT specialist, and having to take a course of prescription ear drops.

Apparently this is why mine comes with Nurturell but not Oto-Ease.... Safety alert: Oto-Ease ear lubricant may be contaminated with bacteria and mold !!!

Wow... I had always suspected that my ear infection issues were actually caused by the Oto-Ease and not the ES5's themselves. When I got my remoulds back from Westone -- just to be safe -- I didn't touch the Oto-Ease and indeed never had another ear infection.

Before the remoulds, I had discussed with my Audiologist the possibility of the Oto-Ease being the issue. However, considering that my right ear canal never had any issues, we figured that it was unlikely that Oto-Ease was the cause, as I was using Oto-Ease for both ear canals.

In retrospect though, during my original visit to the Audiologist I very distinctly recall experiencing acute pain when the left impression was made and no pain whatsoever when the right impression was made.

It would seem to me then that whatever bacteria/mold may have been present in the Oto-Ease may have had a better chance of causing problems with my left ear canal as it may have still been slightly irritated. It didn't help that I had my ES5s rushed, meaning that my left ear canal would have had very little time to heal...

Do you guys think the 50 inch ES cable is too short? I'm thinking of buying a black one, but I think the 64 inch that I have right now is too long and I find it getting caught in something way too often nearly cutting my ears off lol.

Depends, how tall are you? I am 5ft 9 and I make my cables about 130cm (51 inches) as this allows the cable to go behind my ears, down my back and wrap around to my left jeans pocket with some spare length left over for turning my head and deeper pockets.

64" is way too long, only useful for desktop amp or PC under the table type situation. Well actually I can't see why I'd ever need 64" to be honest

I made sure to buy both lengths. I'm 5' 11" and the 50" cables will not allow my iPhone or Galaxy S3 to sit at the bottom of my front pants pocket. Since the 64" cable is way too long, I just us a sandwich bag tie and manually shorten it to the perfect length for my height and distance to the bottom of my deepest pants pockets. Turns out to be about 54 inches from end to end.

Just got my es5 this morning. Now using it on my way to job interview, while typhoon signal no3 is hoisting...

Although I am just using it outta the box, the sound and fit is really amazing. I nearly cannot hear the sound of the bus engine, wind and rain outside the bus. And the sound signature is the familiar Westone one, with more clear treble and bass.

I have ordered the TWag V2 cable, will play with it later when it arrive.

Nice choice. Twag v2 is a very good match. Typhoon No 8 (Tropical Cyclone warning signal) will be issued before 6 p.m. - stay at a safe place and enjoy the ES5.

which Twag v2 cable did you ordered?

The Eclipse one? I've been on hiatus on Head-Fi for a few months now, and when I come back, the white Twag v2 cable seems to be gone, only the black one(Eclipse) is listed on the site.

and the Whipslash forum seems pretty dead.
