I'm also thinking about getting Custom Art, If my ES5s need to be refitted when they arrive.
Hopefully not :p

Gun Metal Grey or Smoke in colour :)

The black should be transparent :)

Or I might get the Splattered Notes custom art they have on their website :)

What do you guys think?

Dear, I would go with the first one or the second one. The pictures on the third and the fourt in-ears doesn't really seem to be related. And to be honest, I would go with the left in-ear from picture 1 and with the right in-ear from picture 2. That would be a good combination.

Could I instead of buying a portable headphone amp first, buy a DAC first and use it without an amp? Or does this not work?

Mopshond,

The Cypherlabs Algorhythm Solo is a DAC whilst the Pico Slim is a headphone amplifier.
The rig should be iPod -> Solo -> Pico Slim amplifier -> ES5s.

Personally I've never used a Pico Slim, but I've used the Ray Samuel's Predator as well as the ALO RX Mk2 with the Solo.
Both increase the sound quality tremendously, even tho I've only used Westone Um3x and Alessandra MS Pro headphones with them.

My recommendation is that you first purchase a portable headphone amp and see how satisfied you are with its sound quality, if you are satisfied then I would keep it at that, only once that you want another improvement do I recommend buying a Algorhythm Solo.

If you buy the DAC first.  You cannot control the volume, Thus the music will play at full volume.  You could get an amp first.  Use that with your portable device until you get the DAC.

From the CLAS site:
"I want to play music without using an amplifier, can I do that?
Not really. The analog line level output is only slightly amplified and will not drive larger headphones. There is no volume control on the AlgoRhythm Solo. The line level out is set at maximum volume so it is best used for delivering the audio stream to powered speakers or an amplifier, either a headphone amp or home amp." http://www.cypherlabs.com/FAQ.php

Yep what Hiyono said.

Buying a DAC would result in your music being the maximum volume due to it being a line out.

Usually what most people do is that they buy an amp first.

Depending on your music tastes it kinda differs I guess.
Personally I would recommend Ray Samuels amps as they sound wonderful after they burned in.
ALO RX Mk2 is a great amp to buy, only if you intend to get an Algorhyhtm Solo.

The way I see it, if you are truly absolutely sure that you really actually do in fact want anime girlie porn in your ears, then don't take silly half measures. It's the above FTW.

On the moment I am kind of thinking about the Algorhyhtm Solo DAC, since it's made for iPod, and the ALO RX Mk2, since this seems to be the amp to go for when you have the Algorhyhtm Solo. However, the money, I hope I can find an used one.

Just received the FedEx tracking code from Westone (I requested them to ship to me directly to Shanghai instead of to my audiologist in DC where my ear impressions were made on May 10).

ETA Shanghai is June 7!!

As Mopshond said, I would go with the left side of the first picture and the right side of the second picture. This is better because characters tend to look really small on IEM faceplates, so it's better to get a closer picture of a character if you want artwork--and since the second image is closer on the character, it would look better on the IEM in my opinion.

Originally the characters on my JH16's were sent in with much more background/material to the artist at JH Audio, but the artist there cropped them to measure and the characters became the centerpiece of the IEMs. I had a lot of communication with the artist and he explained to me why this is better for a small surface like the faceplate of an IEM. They look much better this way, otherwise they would be so tiny on the faceplate of the IEM.

I sent an email to music@westone.com and asked for the status of the shipment (I included my original email exchange with my audiologist so they know which order I was referring to) and they responded promptly with a FedEx tracking number.

So, umm, quick question to the Pico Slim users out there.  Do you guys feel the bass response is actually neutral?  Because, umm...OMG.  That's quite a decent amount of low end presence I'm getting atm.

I find the bass to be deeper and faster with the Slim, but not boosted with my ES5/ES3X.  However, it does seem to boost the JH13Pro bass for me, making it a little more than I like.

Thanks everyone for your replies.  My audiologist got an email back from Westone and they recommend picking one of the two on the bottom for best results.  They didn't give an explanation why.  Maybe less detailed and elaborate background and better contrast in colors.  Most of my friend and cousins liked the girl with the saw.  I still like all 3.  But since I got the most feedback for the other pick.  I'll spend time tomorrow and edit it more and resubmit to Westone.  If they still say the results wont be as good.  I'll pick either Rei/Asuka or Saber/Rin.  Since I'm spending so much time and money  into this.  Need to get it perfect :D
