Velour/Felt Pads for ATH-M50?
Dec 2, 2014 at 1:43 AM Post #391 of 441
As promised here are the Pics of the Shure 940 Pads on my M50's, They have been on there for about 6 months and still look brand new.

And here is how I got the pads to fit/seal tightly with the headphone, It's just a single strip of 1cm wide weather striping placed around the circumference of the ear cup then wrapped over to the top of the earcup. Not a very good picture representation, I can go into more detail if anyone is interested.

I was looking at the reviews for these pads and saw that many have used them on the M50s but many have also complained that they are slightly loose and the pads tend to move a bit. I think this is a terrific idea and I am going to try the very same thing when they arrive. Thanks.

I got lost in this thread. Where can i find an exact replacement for the ath-m50 pads? Not velour! Just the same exact ones like the ones that come with the ath-m50s themselves. If you can provide with a link (amazon if possible), i'd appreciate it!

For those who still need the Sound Professionals velour earpads they are now available for 19,99 on Massdrop!
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/ath-m50x-velour-earpads/

Only cost me $6.70 to ship them all the way to the Netherlands.

Soundguys has a video tutorial on replacing the ATH-M50x earpads at:

Very easy to replace and I really enjoy listning to my ATH-M50x with these earpads. Sound slightly less harsh to me with these earpads and now i can enjoy my AT's all day! :)

Here's the official M50x pads. They are fairly new. The pads only started to sell a few months ago separately, I'm pretty sure.

Can anyone who has used the M50x or bought these exact pads confirm the differences between them and the original M50 pads? Are they really more comfortable? Are they made with a newer/different pleather material? Are they thicker than the original and do they still crack and get stiff over time??? Appreciate any help.

I picked up the sound professional m50 velour pads from Massdrop, and I can say they are DEFINITELY more comfortable. Way less sweat and heat over long periods of time, and feel really nice on your skin. Not a new type of pleather, they are straight velour, slightly thicker than the originals, and so far haven't cracked or been getting stiff.

With regards to sound quality, you're going to sacrifice a small bit of bass and isolation, but the comfort definitely makes up for those losses.

Hi guys,

I have recently ordered the ATH M50's used from Ebay. I have been doing a lot of research on them and have read this entire thread. These are my first real good pair of headphones and I plan on wearing them as much as possible. I am not an audiophile by any means but I definitely would like them to be comfortable and so am leaning towards getting some velour or velvet pads.

After all the discussions I have come to the conclusion that these are the pads that most people are suggesting and that I have heard most about

I don't really want to put tape or make any big changes to the pad and have heard some negative about SQ from 250 so those are out.

Anyway I should be getting the headphones soon so don't really wanna make a decision till I have worn them and listened to them for a while. But want to have an idea about which one I should get if i do decide to go for some replacement pads. Sorry to resurrect this thread but for all you guys who are experts on sound/comfort of the ATHM 50's what would you recommend for a new listener?

The 840/940 seem loose so am scared of those- maybe will try the 940 on top of the stock pads. Leaning most towards the Brainwave HM5 and the sound professional ones at the moment. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance guys

Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows when replacement pads for Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 will be released? I think that this would be a perfect upgrade considering that shape of headphones is almost exactly the same.

The pads on my ATH-M50x are too small for my ears. Are the Sound Professional velour pads larger/deeper than the stock pads? I'm trying to decide between these and the SRH840/SRH940 pads.

The velour pads I purchased were the same size as the stock pads.  A very good fit, but a bit small for my big head.  I got some large pads from the internet and they move a bit too easily on my M50x's, but they are very comfortable.

So I have a brand new pair of velour pads I do not use...

Hey Guys new yo this forum, just wanted to say thank you to everyone who posts feedback about all things audio.  I recently just purchased the m50x and had the Sound Professional Velour Pads bundled with them.  Honestly the pads are great but the opening is just too small for my ears.  They get rave reviews so i am in the market to sell them. I will ship them anywhere in the world. Please let me know if anyone wants them they are the burgundy kind.

I really don't want to part with these i think they add a great contrast to the black, but they just hurt my ears, I am sure they won't hurt someone elses I guess my ears are slightly larger than the center opening.  I did however order the alcantra earpads off the SRH1540 and will receive them today. I can give some feedback on how they fit on the m50x as well as comfortability for someone who has sensitive ears.  IF anyone is interested let me know.

I received the Sound Professionals velour pads last week.

No real complaints, but I really didn't see any benefit of them.  Sure, they felt more comfortable TO THE TOUCH, but my ears still got hot and sweaty.  This is because the opening for your ear is the same size as the stock pads, regardless of what they say on their website.

I received the Shure 940 pads today...and yes, they do fit a bit loose on the phones if you don't apply a bit of ingenuity to make the space that the pads fit onto slightly larger...but I love them!  I am very used to the longer oval shape ear openings similar to what Sennheiser uses...this allows my ears to not touch the pad opening at all.

I now have that same style feel, on my AT's!

I got in the Shure SHR940 pads today. Definitely too loose stock. Added some weatherstripping around the circumference of the ear cup on the M50x and that tightened up the feel some. Astonishingly more comfortable than the stock pads. Decent sound, bass might be sliiiightly reduced, and the treble seems a bit more forward. But they seem to still sound pretty good. Hard to do an A/B with the stock pads. I'd be curious to hear how the Alcantara pads work as well, but so far, this is pretty decent.

Can you post a photo of what you did with the weatherstripping? I just got the SHR940 pads but didn't have much luck when I tried to put weatherstripping on to make them more secure.
