I would be interested in also seeing a review of the differences between the DC03 and DC04, if possible by using the same headphones + cable to see to what extent the iBasso DC04 brings additional improvement simply because of being balanced instead of single-ended

(At least I have been tremendously enjoying my DC04, but in my house its competitors are clearly in a league of their own and it would be unfair to line up the DC04 against them)

hmm been away awhile, What is the firmware upgrade about for DC03 DC04? DSD 256?
or solving the intermittent connection with some Smartphone?
anyway, a local reviewer give some alternative how to solve the intermittent connection problem, especially with samsung smartphone. for my case is Note20u.
the issued can be solve by using OTG cable, 2 OTG to be exact...
Now I can Unplug the USB DAC when I receive a call, and re plug it again without restarting my Note20u...
Well, hope this can be alternative...

Which other portable dac in your house would you say tops DC04?

Sorry.. To clarify.. The DC04 competitors in my house are an iFi Micro iDSD Signature and a FiiO M15 of which one is a semi-portable USB DAC and of which the other can be used as one.

DSD256 is supported natively without any firmware updates out-of-the-box.DSD 256?
hmm.. currently, DC04 can't play 256DSD, or at least in some of the batch in my country.DSD256 is supported natively without any firmware updates out-of-the-box.
But I didn't listen to this with my smartphone, due to large file size.

Hmmm latter i will try using audirvana on MBP

in my case the only problem for DC 03 & 04 is silent part at volume step around 50% either on MBP or UAPP Android. Never had that issue on AKM based DC 01 & 02
need further firmware update i guess

You need to check your settings if there are any, maybe somewhere there's a programmed limit, it definitely should support DSD256. Yeah, I just checked: https://community.audirvana.com/t/dsd-over-pcm-and-dac-max-sampling-frequency/14316
But on your screenshot, it's clearly visible that you already use 1.1. Might be a bug with Audirvana.
