Aren´t you just talking about price desentivisizing... spell check please?

the DT 990/DT 880 hasn´t gone down in price since the T1 released.
HD 650 is still as expensive as prior HD 800 release.
It doesn´t seem to work that way sadly since they are priced so many times those offerings
Many who get the HD 650 would never dream of paying 1400$ for a headphone,
just like many would not dream of paying for a HD 650.

I'm talking about the ability to buy a perfectly-good, often LNIB, headphone on the used market for a mere fraction of the MSRP.  Brand-new top-of-the-line headphones don't fetch too many after-market opportunities.  Far too often, the used price for something hot, hot, hot is the new price minus the equivalent of a restocking fee.  The MSRP on the HD650 is $650 (How coincidental).  But if you buy them from one of the many vendors Sennheiser sends you to, it's $500.  And that's brand new retail through an authorized reseller.  You can buy the same headphones, off of Ebay, from authorized dealers for low threes.  By the time you get to the used market, whether on Ebay or right here at Headfi, you can get a pristine used HD650 for $250 or less.

You wouldn't be able to go from $650 to $250 if the HD650 were still the flagship at Sennheiser.  A shift in top dogs and bragging rights will allow someone to pick up the 650 for a song.

And what's true of the HD650 is true elsewhere.  The MSRP on both the DT990 and DT880 are $350 - not bad prices when you consider beyer's top dog, the T1, has an MSRP of $1300.  Yet, BNIB versions of the DT990 are easily fetched for less than $250 on Ebay and the DT880 fetches low twos as well.  Here, at Headfi, I've seen some terrific bargains in the $180 range.  Again, those are remarkable drops from MSRP.  We could play this game with AKG and Grado, Denon and AT.  The point remains the same: once the spotlight and the bragging rights have moved on, a whole generation of headphone buyers get to eat great leftovers.

I just watched Edition10 World Premiere. They are huge! Looking more and more interesting. I allways thought that bigger cups on Edition8 would make them perfect headphones and now we have even better. Too bad about the price, though R10 go for twice as much.

Head over to Audiogon and run a search for speakers in the $1,000-$3,500 range.  It's full of classic, excellent speakers.

For $1,800, you can buy Steve Hoffman's old Magnepans.

Klipschorns for $2,200.

B&W Matrix 801s around $2,000.

Quad ESLs from $2,000-$3,000.

Vandersteen 3As around $1,200.

I could go on, but these speakers will throw any pair of headphones on the floor and stomp them.  As for powering these speakers, a used integrated NAD ($300-$1,000) or similar would be fine.

Headphones are turning into a poor value.  Everyone is throwing out "prestige" models that often end up costing you more than an excellent pair of used speakers.

well said.

plus: they have to be twice as good as HD800, T1, K1000, or else they will be known as "flashy and overpriced" aka bose :)

I too think the price is tough to justify for most people. But we all do have different value systems, and for some people, speakers aren't an option.

The design looks cool, a bit like a 60's toaster but I love the size and the pads, about speakers I'm sure you can buy a lot homy speakers, but not the Adam S3X-H / S4X and up. I just hope to get a chance to demo the 10's asap....
