Hi folks,

I, like quite a few of you, picked up a pair of TF10s during the great Amazon sale of 2009. I'm a little concerned that they may be having trouble playing some frequencies though. In one track in particular (Diane, by Guster), I notice some static noise in my left earbud about four seconds into the song. The static is rhythmic with the bass and lasts for 10 or 15 seconds. Since my previous IEMs before the TF10s were a pair of ADDIEM and ER6i's, neither of which have nearly the same range of bass, I haven't been able to reproduce the static with either of them.

I know that there's a good chance that the TF10s just give a much more accurate reproduction of my source, and the problem is with the track, not the headphones. But it could be the other way around. Back on pages 69-71 of the thread I know some other members went through the same thing.

Have people recently had any similar experiences? I'm wondering how much the TF10s are either (a) failing or (b) brining out the flaws in people's libraries.

Thanks for the help/advice. Especially to Jodiuh who's been conversing with me about this over email.

I can't speak for the rest of your library or your TF10s, but the particular issue you mention with "Diane" is just part of the track. I first heard it on my PRO 900s and thought there was something wrong with the left driver. I've since heard it on my TF10s as well.

You can hear something similar a few tracks later at the beginning of "Backyard". Just a flaw that crept in during the recording/mixing of the album it seems. KIT is still a fabulous album, IMO, despite its less-than-stellar production at times.

Phew, glad to hear it's not just me. And you're right about Backyard, it's not quite as bad, but it also sounds like it's being clipped or aliased. It's disappointing to have better headphones point out flaws in some of your favorite albums!

Who knows? That's what Sony called them. Could be the sound tube being made of a different material is the reason.

ok now i tried the hybrids tonight after getting them today. they definitely feel different than silicone. i gotta say the feel is much better. it's got a 'softer' vs 'shiny' feel on it.

more like slightly gooey but still smooth silicone vs the standard slick silicone tips if that makes sense. much easier to get a seal.

so far sound is pretty darn good, testing out some tracks as we speak.

i had the super.fi's for close to a year before i decided i needed more sound.

the triples definitely were a huge upgrade. while sometimes i feel the highs are a tad tad too much for me, everything else is superlative aka soundstage, details, lows, mids, highs, separation.

if you are getting a good fit with both, i would think you need a top IEM with the warmest signature. from what i gather the triples lean towards warmer overall, with some recessed mids (that help give it that soundstage) along with some present highs.

i think you need more warm.

May I ask from where? I take it that you are referring to the TF10?

I will be getting real hybrids in a week or so so I can compare them, but right now M "hybridy"s are what I'm using with my TF10. Definitely better than the UE silicones, anyway. Didn't like the complys either, in comparison.

Personally, I found the eBay bi-flanges to be terrible. Very very flimsy material, providing zero isolation. They just crumple in your ear when you insert them. They are from the same mould as RE0 bi-flanges (the small size) but about a fourth of the stiffness (the RE0 ones are too stiff, IMO). Somewhere in between would probably be good...

thank you for your thoughts

please let us know when you get the 'real' hybrids so you can do an A/B comparison

I am still using my 'stock' UE medium silicone tips. The seal is OK, sound is OK, but maybe my ears are just spoiled...

cheers

Used, from someone on the Something Awful forum. I also picked up my previous Shure E3cs from a non-audiophile forum for a really good price.
seems to be a good place to look for cheap IEMs
