I was looking into at CTH myself, but the lack of pre-built options sent me the other direction. I recently picked up a Schiit Lyr for my TPs, and I'm pretty happy with my purchase. YMMV.

I'd love a Lyr as well but it's just out of my budget.

what type of finish you looking for ?

I like the actual color of the untreated cups and as I said, I know almost nothing about wood finish. If there was a way to keep that black and white contrast AND have high gloss lacquered finish, that would be perfect.

Unfortunaly, I don't believe I could go through a 15-step process and get a nice result on first try, so maybe  something simpler. What are the alternative?

What result can I expect from oil and wax only ? I have pharmacy-grade mineral oil, would that do or should I buy a specialised product ?

first thing is apply some boiled linseed oil

then go look up ca glue finish

other wise it will take upto 10 steps to get the finish you want.

Thanks Teejaay for the info. I see that the method is mainly used for pen turning. I have 2 questions :

First, i've read that since Black wallnut is a porous wood, one should start by sanding it with oil so that the resulting slurry fills the pores of the wood.  Can you comment on this, I don't know what to expect if I do this prior to applying CA glue.

Second, I don't have access to my lathe for a few weeks. Can the CA glue be applied by hand (I have some 30 seconds setting glue) ? If not, I guess I can make a drill adaptor to spin the cups.

ahh yeh ca glue wont work for you.

try out min wax wipe on poly high gloss it will take a good 6-10 layers pretty much once you have good build up enough to cover all the pores go back with 1k grit wet sand it with like mineral spirits till its smooth again buff it to remove the scratch marks then apply a few more layers of poly then your done. its pretty simple takes maybe 5 mins to apply each layer and about 4-7 hours per layer to dry. problem with high gloss is it shows every thing.

can somebody give me the measurements of the o2 pads? I'm going to try my hand at making them, as well as a material to stuff them with, some Steam punk thunder pants are going to be a graduation project....summer really. I hvae a good idea* i have no lathe* to make the cups*layers of wood then drill and carve out what I dont need* I plan to re do the headband and make an almost AKG headband but with no elastics. I will be working on a sketch but I have way to much stuff going on right now to do so.

So I have been reading up on how to make these, does the depth, and shape of the cups effect the sound? I know that people say to dampen the cups immensely with thick semi porous/fluffy material to stop reflections but does the wood effect the sound?

Not sure about the shape of the cup, but Smeggy once mentionned that bigger cup depth had a bad effect on sound quality.  Dampening is definitly going to affect sound and you probably should go though the thread to read about that (also the T50RP thread)... many people tried lots of stuff

just dampen to try and reduce any reflection back toward the driver, thick porous felt or fiberfill for your house walls works well. i'd also cover the front of the baffle (not over the driver but around)  by your ear as well it helped reduce the echoey sound i was getting. Just search around and experiment its the best way to find your perfect setup.
