I own 7 IEMs in the above list. And they would have been 8 if I had ordered the Phönix from Andrew last Monday rather than directly from Vision Ears ...
My top 3 right now (I'm in a "basshead" time):
IER Z1R (recently rediscovered after a few months of temporary neglect)
EXT (may be “new toy” glamor…)
XE6 (same as above)
Just been enjoying some pretty cool electronic music from Bonobo; specifically his Migrations albums (which I prefer to the recently released Fragments).
XE6 for energetic genres. Once I got used to the kinetic bass it was hard to go back to the Bird for EDM / Metal / Hard Rock. Xe6 Hammers down on the bass. Its the type of IEM that makes me want to run 10 miles before my coffee. Another key point is that it can do that for me with less fatigue than the Bird.
My main reference: Traillii for its sophistication and timbre accuracy. I can always count on it to give me an excellent playback for whatever I throw at it. Its my main pick for classical, vocal heavy songs and soft rock. I remember my first day with it. It re-opened my third eye for a brief period. I was able to travel back in time and light a match at a live Queen concert.
#3 This might be too early to say but VE Phonix. It can compete with the Traillii with vocals. It has a lush, vivid characteristic but keep a detailed playback. The fact that I was able to notice improvements over the Bird in several categories deserves a spot in the top 3.
Honorable mention: EE Odin (I no longer own it). It has a supreme level of articulation, detail retrieval, and clarity. The W9 DD bass drivers can be preferred over the XE6 for detail. If the tuning was better suited for ears, I would have kept it. Maybe the Odin V2 will patch that for me.
Love Bonobo, great artist - particularly enjoy during the summer, nice upbeat music. I've very find memories of when Black Sands was released, played it daily on a holiday at the time and always reminds me now - the closing title track is so beautiful...
What do you guys think about pressure release systems (Atom, Apex, etc.) vs IEMs without. I just thought it was interesting that the first IEM and one of the only ones in the top list is the Xe6.
Considering how good SQ has gotten across the board, I can’t say that any IEM is a must have or a must try. Compared to all the pack in buds that I had when I first came here looking for advice in 2009, improvements (both in IEM and accessible quality of recordings) are pretty vast.
Yesterday, my second First Times arrived. This morning FT and Phonix are on the burn in rig. Sade playing on the burn in rig. I think this is the best BA bass I have ever heard. Phonix sounds even more open and here in the room. F Trailli. This is good enough for me, and in two different flavors.
Phönix is an enjoyable iem, loved it but Trailli has better BA Bass.
Phönix is great on mid bass and I loved her Mid BA timbre as I love my aroma thunder.
I’m pretty sure Ace would be better and Jewel even more.
I ordered Fibae 7 Ultimate because I’m so curious about Custom Arts and I trust @audio123 enough to go with a blind buy!
Listening to Agnes Obel tonight following the conversation earlier. Went with Z1R - Holy moly, phenomenal... certainly punches way above it's price tag. Beautiful vocals and accompanying instruments, all wonderfully positioned on such a natural sounding stage.
