i know, but i'll need a DAC bc my laptop is utter crap, so it comes out to be more than the bithead. also, i have a small desk and i'm trying to reduce desk clutter. has anyone heard either of these combos, or something similar?

I also love my 580s with 600 grilles and 650 cable. But I recently upgraded the cable to a cardas wow...I'm happy enough that I canceled my planned upgrade to either the 600/650.

My K701 still trumps these senns though :p

no, upgrade cables are a point of diminishing returns in SQ.

Anything above Ipod earbuds is a knowingly made purchase with diminishing return in SQ.

I've been using 580s w/600 grilles, 650 cables and a 770 headband for about two weeks for late night TV. I switched to my 701s halfway through Mad Men (great show BTW, too bad it's not in HD) last night and was blown away at how much more "real' the 701s sounded. The IBM Selectric typewriters sounded so real, as did all the background chatter. I still love the combo, but maybe I don't need three pair anymore.

I love these headphones, I have the ATH-500 and the 580's and I like both very much. But there is something about the 580's, Just sounds better to me.

As that's my first post on head-fi i wan't to say hi to everyone!
I discovered this site some time ago and was struck by amount of information on here.580's were my first hi-end headphones that I bought and last so far but I like them for their natural sound and great open feel. Also I must confes that for almost 3 years i was listening to them without an amp and thought they sound great.lately i understood how stupid i was and ordered C&C box+ that should be here sometime next week,I can't wait! But as for 580's they are probably the best for the money or they were as they are discontinued, and I'm really happy that I own a pair.

Well I have been enjoying my 580's for around 14 years now, and recently aquired a Yamamoto HA-02, and they have gone from "good" to truly excellent.

Your 580's not sounding so great, get an amp that can make them give of their best, and there are not many of them sort of amps around.

I had my 701's on early this morning while watching the European Formula 1 Grand Prix and decided to switch to my modded 580s. WOW, they do a fantastic job on the sound of those cars revving to 19K!! I stuck with them till the end of the race. If you've never heard F1 in real life, tune into Speed two weeks from now (Hungarian GP), pop on your 580s and crank it up. You won't believe your ears.

One of the Absolute Sound reviewers uses the sound of F1 race cars he records in the field as a reference for audio. He says it is very difficult to reproduce correctly and he has a live reference.

Others use hand clapping as another reference sound that is hard to reproduce correctly.

Great stuff. Especialy 14 through 16) The thing about watching on Speed is you hear 22 cars at once (at least before turn one, then you usually lose a car or two) echoing around all at once. For me it's like a symphony. In real life it just too loud without earplugs. The announcers shut up at the start and tell you to turn it up! The start is absolutely insane!

This sounds awesome to me, the K701 have been my most wanted cans after my Darth Senns.
