The official "most OVERRATED headphones" thread
Oct 6, 2007 at 10:53 PM Post #271 of 666
dont forget the FX33, i know you´re not suppose to expect much for a pair of $12 headphones, but in the mid of the hype about them, people were saying basicly that the marshmellows were gods gift to headphone modders,

i moded 2 pairs, they sounded horrible,

DT880's are one of the few phones that haven't been posted here.

I guess that's because they are just so dynamic, they work with everything (IMO).

(I just received them a few days ago, used and all broken in, and I couldn't be happier with them.)

Overrated? Hmm, I don't actually know, I've been happy with everything I've bought so far.

Lucky me

So, you're saying you tried the Sextett and found it to be overrated vs. your AKG 220-M?

When I think of the most overrated headphones, the ones that come to mind quickly are:

JVC Marshmellows
SR80
SR125
SR225

E4CS Huh???
GS1000

"Beyerdynamic DT250 anyone? Haven't heard them, but..." But what? You want to say something that you've never heard should be on the "most overrated" list?

Whew!!! (Or was he looking for a 'most underrated' in the midst of a 'most overrated' thread, per chance?)
MDR-EX71

In other words, I don't think for myself. I just go by what everyone else says. That's why I care about what is over "rated" so much!

Ok, so I may have missed a couple, plus I gave up after 10 pages... so shoot me!

Oh sure, many times. For a list of the most underrated headphones, as assembled by Head-Fi's collective minds, ears and finger tips (got to give credit to the finger tips for they allow us to post in threads like this) you could do an archive search and find all sorts of threads about the most underrated headphoens. Or you could use the shortcut method and just read the list above. The same headphones (all headphones, eventually) make either list!

Grado HP-2. Great for its time, but it's now getting rather dated. It has many admirable attributes, however, detail & resolution fall short compared to the RS-1 and higher end Stax setups. Fortunately, it can be fixed via the EnABL treatment along with recabling and a bit of twiddling with the internals.

AKG K1000. See Grado HP-2.

Sennheiser HD580, 600, 650. Good for the price and perform well in their price segment, but far from world class state of the art as claimed by many of their proponents.

AKG K701. See Senn HD580 et al.

AKG K340. It can sound quite good, but again, not world class by any means. Speed, resolution, and resonance are fundamental design issues caused by the physical layout of the headphones, they can't be fixed. There's just too much reflection and stored energy in the system for good speed and low-level detail & resolution.

Creative EP-630: These are just horrible I don't even know where to start

Sennheiser CX300: See above

Alessandro MS-1: I was really disappointed with these when I got them, especially when I got compared them with my KSC-75's

I don't like AKG K701 because of strangely emphasized trebles, however really overrated headphones are IMHO Beyerdynamics DT770 Pro. There is nothing but huge, uncontrolled and dry bass and a bit of squeaking higher midrange. Horrible. <_<

KSC-75

A great bargain to be sure, but far from the second coming of Jeebus and universal recommendation to newbies.

Sennheiser HD650, I don't understand why you would want monotone muddy bass that drowns out all of the detail in the music.

Unless you are a hip-hop fan.

Have you got a personal vendetta against the HD650s? The bass is nothing like what you describe.

My goes to the SR60s. The sound is okay but they're so flimsy and extremely uncomfortable. Not to mention they have the most annoying cord of all time.

I am Senn HD650 royal fan member. But I do agree with Svperstar, in cases where HD650 is not properly amped and source material is less than stellar. The balanced version fo HD650 is another level that can compete against any cans costing below $1000.
