The New iRiver/Astell & Kern AK100: A High-End DAP

Hey everyone, I have a question that requires some technical knowledge to answer. On the A&K Facebook page they've answered an output impedance question saying:

Based on our testing, music quality and volume is insufficient to listen to hi-res audio if the power wattage does not reach at least 7mW or less. And that is one of the reasons why the AK100 has a high output impedance, so that users can listen to high-definition music at least below 7mW.

I can't work out if they actually mean "7mW or more" or if they're wanting to keep the power below 7mW. With my lack of electrical knowledge I am assuming that keeping the power above 7mW would lead to the dynamics and energy required or have I got it back-to-front? If it is about keeping the power down, how does that impact the sound?

Well, I haven't the faintest clue, but sometimes I find jerking the volume up on my amp gives better dynamics on different headphones.

My audio engine A5 speakers sound better past a certain volume level, I find it a little uncomfortable to listen at that level though so I tend to lower it any ways. But I can see how this explanation could work.

The only thing I can think of is that they may be losing bits in the volume control at low volume but that would be more poor preamp design than amp stage. With 24/192 you may need more than 32 bit float for the V control to maintain dynamic range at low volumes. I don't know what they use here but there isn't much out there above 32 bit right now.

That said,  LOL

I followed this thread from the beginning. I had high hopes that this could be.............
But I think we all need to wait until a serious hifi supplier takes care of a proper DAP.

im confuse; isnt it AK should be @ max volume IDEALLY when paired with external amp? lately ive read that some user are just @ mid volume while connected to amp...

Modified to get rid of the 22 ohm resistors or stock? You can always contact Vinnie R, who posted above.

I bought my stock version directly from iriver's USA online store: shop.iriverinc.com. They're offering free shipping plus a free $50 download credit on HDTracks if you buy it from their webstore. Stock versions are also on Amazon, but you don't get the HDTracks download credit though.

With the micro sd, does all music on cards and internal memory show up as one data store?
